I escorted a over sized load today from the rear 160 miles from Kentucky to the Virginia state line for the family trucking company and had a blast but once I got home and was telling another driver he immediately said that it was illegal that I didn't have the right safety courses, certificate etc.. etc... and before I go on let me tell you this guy is a you can't do that or It can't be done! kinda guy that's not always right so I need some second opinions.
I had the over sized load banners front/back, The over sized load lights on top and the CB radio and basically just gave the driver heads up for passing vehicles and blocked passing vehicles when a tight bridge or hazard came up, I used my personal vehicle with only my personal insurance nothing special and I couldn't find anything online that required safety courses or certificates to flag in Kentucky.
Was this legal in Kentucky?
Do you need special insurance or training?
Whats the correct term used for this job?
ANY extra info would be greatly appreciated as I'm trying to get started into it.
How do you become a Pilot/Escort vehicle for oversized loads?

You may not need a certification in KY, I don't know for sure. But what you did was not legal, you are required to carry liability insurance to do that. You are lucky that there wasn't an accident, you could have been sued into oblivion.
cburch21, RollinThunderVet, roshea and 2 others Thank this. -
I have liability on my pick-up but is there other liability you need to perform this job other than the liability that most people have?

Escorting loads is not some thrill ride, because its fun. It is a business, and there are costs that go with it to be compliant.Straight Stacks Thanks this. -
How do I go about that? I really need some info.
Thanks for the link! -

Yes, Oscar is correct. For Ky. no cert for the driver are needed. Now if you went into Va. and got caught, you still might be there waiting on speedy bail bonds to get you out of Jail.
You need different insurance as the other posters have stated.
Va. you need to be certified.snowman_w900 Thanks this. -
Googled certification

Thanks guys!
Update: I just called progressive about there commercial liability and it's going to triple my insurance cost and be around 340$ per month - liability, of course I'm 23yrs old and was told after 30 your going to get a lower rate but as of now the part time jobs pay minus cost of insurance doesn't add up well.
The bare min rate would be 1,400$ per year, probably wouldn't be able to go into PA without that 1,000,000 put up and I'll have to check with what most company's require.
Good thing I have my Class A CDL and always can find local work for the family.Last edited: Oct 29, 2013
