A long time buddy of mine is a trainer. He currently has a trainee on his truck that is in the sleeper +14 hours per day. I’m also told he’s slow to get the truck moving when the trainee is supposed to be driving. Pretrip is ok, but takes forever. Fuel stops are full on productions, and maybe 3-4 bathroom breaks per day. Also the trainee is a non-smoker.

My initial reply was that the trainee is on drugs. My buddy assured me he isn’t. He’s checked and searched. I suggested he explain the math on making money via CPM. Check, he did that. He said the Trainees wife is out looking at houses thinking they hit a vein of gold.

I suggested “having pride” in what you do and doing it better than the next guy... nope didn’t work.

So now I’m fascinated at the issue. How do you motivate someone? Obviously he will quit/terminated once he sees it isn’t a gold mine, but for my own sanity what would you do?

Seriously. I’ve never met someone like his trainee.

Some people just CANNOT be motivated.
They lack any kind of desire to better themselves or get ahead in life.

Some people can be motivated by money. Shoe them the money. Others need a big stick, make it painful to be slow.
Make sure the trainee knows that its HIS RESPONSIBILITY to get that load in on time, as weather allows.

His wife may as well quit looking a double-wides, they'll never be able to make the payments.

Way to kill the thread in one post, but ya I totally agree.

I know what most people will say “he’s lazy, he’s been coddled, etc...

Just interested in what might work

I'm sorry. It was just what came to mind. I lack a filter between what I think and what I say.

Re making money via cpm- today you would have made $xxx.xx if you ran your 11; however at your pace you instead you made $xxx.xx

Maybe that math will open his eyes?

Idk how I motivate... ask politely. Offer explanation of why. Then ask without being polite. Then set goals with deadlines. Then start taking privileges. (With kids: with employees... prolly fire them)
