I've heard that it's legal to split your 10 hours and that a lot of drivers aren't aware of this. But how do you do that exactly?
How do you "split" your 10 hours?

Good luck getting an understandable answer to this. It's so confusing, many carriers don't even allow drivers to implement the split sleeper berth logging to eliminate confusion in their own logging departments. But You Can Begin Here At This Advanced Logging Thread Found Here

Google split sleeper and go to the Werner website. That is as good of an example as I have seen.

The split has to be 2 and 8 for it to work out to 10. There is very little reason if any to actually do so. 10 hours of driving is all you can do without a 10 hour reset. So if you drive 9 hours and find you are tired, you can craw in back and take a 2 hour nap but you can only drive the rest of your 2 hours. Then you sleep for 8 and can only drive 8. Or you sleep for 10 and drive 11. It is all very easy to understand. Don't do it unless you have an electronic log to figure it out for you.
Rogerthat and Balakov100 Thank this. -
yeah it's a confusing one for sure but also one of the only redeeming qualities i've found in the e-log as well....besides the DOT inspection being a very rare thing with that green sticker on the side of the truck lol they just don't want to fool with it....anyway....the elog will figure it for you and over time as you watch how many hours you get back after the 8 or the 2, then you get a good grasp for how many hours you'll get back after any particular segment based on how long you ran before you took the break
sometimes it's the only way to make the run work, either for delivery, or pickup on the preplan, or both....generally, i try to get the 2 out of the way first and sometimes at alot of shippers this can beaccomplished....then you get the bulk of the hours back after the 8 in almost all cases......as many different answers to this as there are drivers but in my personal experience, for the routes and loads i run, when i have to do it, i try to work the 2 in first then get the 8 on the back side.....
not exactly the answer you were looking for i know, but just how i work it and what generally works best for me....Last edited: Sep 16, 2012

with team we did 5 on 5 off with paper logs.

Which has been against the rules since they implemented the changes in 2004 or 2005. -
The 8/2 split is silly to me since if you have already spent 8 hours in the sleeper then you might as well take 2 more hours for a full restart. Unless there is a rare case where you do not have enough hours and want to get home to take a 34, then yeah.

easy way..make sure you hours arnt over 14 or 11 ( added together) on eaither side of the 2 hour break. and the drive hours (11) arnt over eaither side of the 8. Example:
you drive 5, take a 2 hr break, after you have 6 drive remaining and 1 hr of work time left. (after the 6 drive hrs you used) you take the 8, now you have 5 drive avalibleRogerthat Thanks this. -
Lots of good reasons to use the split.
Say you're on a tight schedule. You have to deliver tomorrow morning. You still have to drive 5 hours today and if you stop for your supper break then continue on you won't have enough time to take 10 off and deliver on schedule in the morning. However, if your supper break is 2 hours then you will only need to take 8 off before getting to your delivery on time in the morning.
The 8/2 split is very simple once you figure it out but for some reason it's a bear to get your head around it. If you look through the site there's a number of threads on it and it's explained in many different ways. I think the best way to figure it out is to download a trial of DDL and practice with some fake scenarios.
I think most people get confused on the 2 not stopping the clock and having to count on both sides of the split.Rogerthat Thanks this.
