    For all you hiring managers.

How far back are you required to pull up a prospective employee mvr? 10 years?

MVR is previous three years, for each state the applicant has held a license or learner's permit in, and must be sourced from the state licensing agency's CDLIS records. This can come from a third party, but must accurately reflect the CDLIS record of the driver.

    § 391.23 Investigation and inquiries.
    (a) Except as provided in subpart G of this part, each motor carrier shall make the following investigations and inquiries with respect to each driver it employs, other than a person who has been a regularly employed driver of the motor carrier for a continuous period which began before January 1, 1971:

    (1) An inquiry, within 30 days of the date the driver's employment begins, to each State where the driver held or holds a motor vehicle operator's license or permit during the preceding 3 years, to obtain that driver's motor vehicle record covering that driver's prior 3-year driving history.

I see it says maintain records for 3 years.

Last time I talked to the DLD. They told me standard practice for hiring is initially a 10 year mvr record check.

What's required and what's practiced can be anything. We pull as far back as possible. Some states will go back as far as computer records go.

I agree....... I am not sure if there is a regulation minimum, but different companies, pull different dates as their policy dictates. I would typically say its 3 years, but some companies go back to 5, 7 or 10 years if the records are available.

[EDITED] I am not a hiring manager - I was at one time. I just don't remember if there was a regulation.

Most of the insurance companies I dealt with only looked back 3 years while state MVR will run a little longer.

For my last 12 years I got mine through my insurance broker and I would see where he struck off the stuff older than 3 years when using them for our renewal.

I got a copy of everyone's MVR from him after he got them for renewal purposes to use for the annual review.

Most states report the past 3 - 5 years unlike New Jersey which never deletes anything until the 'page' fills up and the driver gets to start another one.
