I'm in my early 40's and am considering going to get my CDL in August after being in the telecommunications industry for close to 20 years because the industry really isn't what it use to be and there seems to be a lot more driver positions out there. I'll start out OTR for the experience until I can find something locally or with better home time. I am married and my daughter is 14 so I don't have any real young ones at home and I've always been somewhat of a loner anyway so the time alone really doesn't sound to bad. I drive a utility van all day so the driving part doesn't bother me either. My biggest fear is that I get my CDL and truck driving isn't what I thought it would be, so my question to all of you is did you have any regrets after getting your CDL and becoming a driver? Thanks for any input.

that is such an individual answer none of us can answer it
expectations of what the business is is how I see the problems arising
you wont get paid by the hour or for every hour you work
some companies are better then others
    some trucks nicer then others
as many different jobs as there are drivers
    one size doesnt fit all
like everything else it is different then it was
    better worse who knows

I started out 12 years ago at 46 with the same goals...

    get experience the get local...

problem is the local jobs in my area were not good when available...i tried them....

at my age now and not accustomed to hard work anymore the thought of p&d work is not doable...

i dont regret it however... i appreciate the opportunity to make a good living and i am now with a company that i can retire with...

good luck...florida is a tough area to get hired from..

Trucking isn't what it used to be either ... The regulation just continues to be piled on, the driver is often left between a rock and a hard place, with a lose-lose decision to make .. on top of that, if you ever are even within 1 mile of a wreck you are going to be found at fault for something... Welcome to paradise!

The only regret is missing some family functions.

I don't regret a thing. Yea, I have been treated like pure #### by companies just like many others have but the love for the job itself when you boil down all the BS leaves me with no regret. It's not for everyone and you have to like what your doing to be happy in life.

    I dunno.
Nope...I live in a great area that has a ton of great driving jobs. I think people regret it if they don't do their research...and have unrealistic expectations.

I started when I was 45. It was something I'd always wanted to do. Ran OTR for ten years and loved it. Not a single regret.
