How much will my skills have diminished in one year?

    Good afternoon all,

I haven't driven since October 2022 and I'm a bit worried about how far my skills may have dismissed in this last year. When I left the road, I had about 1.2 millions miles under my belt.

I was offered a position in safety at a utility company and after I told my family there was no backing out. I agreed to them that I'd give it a go for a minimum of one year and see how I feel. I have a 7 year old, almost 8 after all, why not try?

Well, I miss the road, I long for it. It's not about the money, I make the same that I did then.

Anyway, pardon the extra, non-essential details, just wanted to throw them out there.

Will I be alright jumping back in the truck?
(I've ran stepdeck primarily for my driving career, I'd go back to that.)

Wargames and Flat Earth Trucker Thank this.

The details aren't non-essential; they give us proper perspective.
Yes, you'll be fine "jumping back in the truck."
Virginia Beach is an excellent location for someone in your situation.
Refrigerated freight is what's happening now.
Of course, there's probably some flatbed companies that may be interested in you.

I was thinking about this, running overnight here, and being home still would be great until my son is older. I ran local for a short spit here. I was running home depot loads to customers homes, that experience taught me how to back VERY WELL. After that I went and ran for a company based out of west Chicago and never had any interest in working elsewhere as a driver. The owner is a great man. When I got there, he had 10 trucks in service, when I left he had just under 200.

Now this would be neat, especially if they allow drivers to run overnight. I'm a night owl. Prefer to jump in at 6 and end around 7/8am.

You need to get back behind the wheel soon, though. These companies are real wierd about drivers that don't drive for a couple of years, they act like the driver thats been out of the seat is worse than a a driver with a drug problem. After 2 years Western Express is about the only I have found to retrain ( funny way to put it) experienced drivers.
