Is it possible to check the timing between the crankshaft and camshaft without taking off the gear train cover with this tool ? http://www.apexinds.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_code=M30138

If you know how to use it absolutely. What it does is measure the lift on the injector lobe of the camshaft when the cylinder is at TDC. The book will have a spec to tell you what it should be.
Yes if the head was off its possible to be offVerdel Thanks this. -
The truck starts right up and runs well on flat, but doesn't have the full power on hills. Before removing the head this truck was climbing better on grades. After putting reman injectors, new inj. harness, new check valve on the back of the head, new fuel pump. Checked the fuel pressure.
The last two things I suspect are: Timing is off maybe 1 tooth or the injectors and valves are not done correctly.
Some mechanics are not making difference between 14 L Detroits. There are 14L with N2 injectors DDEC IV and 14L with N3 injectors DDEC V also 12.7 DDEC V with the same cam and injectors.
Here is the file with the spec. For this engine should be:
14 L , DDEC V , model HV_E, camshaft 23532935, year 2004, between 6.655 mm (0.262 in.) and 7.214 mm (0.284 in.)Attached Files:

I was wondering, why Detroit Diesel (W.W.Williams) charges 8 hours to check the timing. Why? With this tool will be a lot less. I don't want to spend $668 for a tool that will be used once.
I am getting 40 psi turbo bust, but the truck still will not run like before.Last edited: Dec 20, 2016

Trust me on this one. In my 15+ years of shop ownership I have removed over 100 Detroit heads (DDEC 2-6) If you were even 1 tooth off, your truck would be smoking like a nuclear power plant smoke stack. I have done it by accident a couple times. What ever your problem is, it is not timing related.

0 414 703 002 - this is for DDEC V - 12.7L motor 7.7 flow
0 414 703 003 - these are on my truck - 8.8 flow
0 414 703 005 - industrial - more flow
0 414 703 007 - industrial - highest flowLast edited: Dec 22, 2016

When on cylinder that needs injector adjustment loosen adjusting nut, torque adjuster to 40 INCH LB. then back off adjuster 3/4 turn. Tighten adjusting nut. Done. Repeat for other 5 following proper "circle method" for DDEC V with N3 injectors. Careful, DDEC V has different procedure than III and IV.
