I have known how to do this for many years. In fact, long before being an EMT.

I actually used it once in an office on a coworker.

Start CPR on someone without a patent airway?
In order to circulate deoxygenated blood?

    Hhhmmm.

If the obstruction cannot be cleared, I was once told as a last resort use something to push it down further.
At the base of the trachea, it has to go into one lung or the other, meaning that the other lung is now free to reperfuse. The FB can be surgically removed later once the patient has stabilized.
Only ever done that on the resus dummy though.

I did not waste time on the video. Air card charges and all.

    I used the Heimlich manuever.

Most people would not have a clue about a patent airway. Their CPR might leave alot to be desired.

I would wonder how you would go about moving it down to either lung though. Seems expulsion of air would be stronger.

Actually, to the "lay person" (formerly known as Advanced Fist Aid) they are telling everyone to NOT use the precardial thump, and to not attempt breathing, only do rapid chest compressions until Medics arrive.

I am thinking the transfer of oral fluids (Hep, HIV, Aids) is a key factor in this issue. But I agree with RM...Heimlich is always the best...unless you can't get your arms around the mid section of course...always wondered about that too. so if the person is tooooooooo "rotund" slam his gut against the counter...maybe?

I agree about air expulsion, but I guess there are some FBs that travel one direction better than others. Maybe the shape of whatever it is means that it can't be retrieved? :biggrin_2556:

(Reminds me of bad nights working ER, patients with weird sex lives attending with "objects" stuck in various orifices! Anything with scales or fins don't slide backwards too easily!!) :biggrin_2555:
