Husband/Wife Team Questions

    After I get my CDL and hire on with a company, my wife is planning to ride along with me and possibly also get her CDL. If she does get her CDL, we would also like to drive as a team.

    It seems that most companies allow or even encourage husband/wife teams. Are there any companies that frown on this situation?

    Also, are there minimum miles for teams? The reason I ask this is because my wife would only drive a partial amount of allowed hours per day, probably 50% of allowed hours. Would this be a problem for us as a team?

    Any comments on these questions, or any advice from husband/wife teams is appreciated.

    that's agreat idea..........

    no, not that i know, afterall, most trucking companies try to match up 2 people as a near perfect fit.........and that's not always possible, so a husband/wife team, they would accept right away.......

    you would want to fully maximize your running hours. they might not like it that one person doesn't fully max out the driving hours. i'd recommend the full allowable driving hours for each, gets you closer to your destination, as proper rest for the other driver can take place....

    Yes for sure, I do, as it would mean more money in our pockets, but ultimately it will be my wife's decision to make. I certainly would not ask her to do more than she would be comfortable with. Once she starts and gets a bit of experience, she may be ok with driving the full allowed hours, time will tell.

    I know every companies #1 policy is to make money, but I am hoping to find one that will be a bit flexible with team mileage if it is occasionally less than average.

    i ran teams several years ago. the companies i did this for, keep teams moving all the time, and made solo drivers sit and wait........

    now, your wife doesn't want to "maximize" her driving time............hmmmm...........

    you two could be sitting...........just a thought...........

    From what I heard husband/wife teak almost never max out driving hours, just what people say, and if so how come every company wants such team. From that I guess there should not be much of a problem.

    My wife and i run team and the company we work for has run us out of hours. thats how we run hard. most companys that hire teams hire them for a reason to get the load there as fast as possible if the trucks sitting your not making any money. good luck with your adventure trucking is what ya make it-jt

    Personally I would like the both of us to run full hours, just because it would mean more money for us.

    If it works out to where she cant run full hours - the way I look at it, if a solo drives 600 miles/day, and a team drives 900 - wouldnt the company still be better off with a team?

    I know there are other considerations for the company than just mileage, such as workers comp, vacation pay etc, but it would seem the benefit of extra miles (over what could be run solo) would outweigh these costs.

    no the company wouldn't be "better off"...............cuz the load isn't as close to its destination as it should be.

    well... tell you what, do it YOUR way, and when you're both hurting for miles/money, etc, come back here and tell us your decision was "the right one".................

    One thing to keep in mind here this guy does not have a CDL yet. I think he is just testing the waters. He won't know if he does not ask. Also he is bouncing ideas off of veteran truckers. Who better to ask? Vets know the score.

    yes i know, but..............

    it would "appear" that his wife would be a "back-up" driver more than a co-driver, by his wording of his questions. the trucking company will still want maximum miles per day, per driver.
