Major Highway 1 closures to begin near Golden
Road to close entirely between April 12 and May 14, 2021
The lengthy closures for road upgrades on Highway 1 near Golden will begin March 29.
From then until April 9, there will be 2-hour evening closures from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m, and overnight closures from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. There will be single alternating traffic from Mondays to Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
However, the highway will be fully open during Easter weekend from April 1 noon to April 6 noon.
Extended 24-hour closures begin April 12 until May 14. During that time the road will be completely closed, except those who use the highway for their daily commute will be permitted to pass through, such as the school bus.
Traffic will be re-routed along Hwy 93 and 95, through Radium.
The Kicking Horse Canyon Project will see Highway 1 redesigned and expanded on a 4.8 km section of road, just outside Golden. Currently, the highway in this area is wedged next to crumbling cliffs and frequently susceptible to rockfall avalanches and car crashes. There are also multiple tight corners.
The project is expected to be finished by 2023 at a cost of $601 million.
Minor closures can be expected this summer, with single lane closures for up to two hours. The 24-hour closures should return next fall.

This was suppose to start last year.
Apparently they widened that tight bend on 93 just North of Radium. That was sure to be popular spot for collisions if they left it alone. -
What used to be a four way stop is now a circle, for improved flow.
The biggest issues that I can see coming, will be up the grade past the hot springs,
Then the twisties and grade to pull for the next ten Km's.not4hire and Phantom Trucker Thank this. -
Yeah and they actually didn’t do too bad of a job with that traffic circle. Plenty of space.
That first bend leading into the canyon on 93 towards Banff was what I was talking about. That really wasn’t big enough for two 53 footers at the same time.Ol'Shusquatch Thanks this. -
Just too bad nobody knows how to use a traffic circle in BC. I've had way too many close calls on that one on Hwy 5. Locals in the circle stopping unexpectedly to let traffic in, traffic entering without yielding (or even looking), truckers taking up the entire roundabout when going straight thru etc.

Going straight thru it was allegedly designed with enough room to not off-track into the other lane. They just point it straight and plow through, or use the wrong lane.

The European's are well practiced with them. You better pay attention, they pass, change lanes and spit out the wanted exit effortlessly. -
This is an example of a place where, I just eliminate any four wheeler opportunity to squeeze in. Come off the highway and just start into the circle occupying most of both lanes. They understand very well and don't bother trying.
Have had pickups there where I have had to go straight through to get south on Lickman. Again just take all the space, watch the mirrors and eliminate the worry.Magoo1968, Prairie Trucker and not4hire Thank this.
