Question. I need to get from Iowa to LA this weekend. Shortest route goes through Denver and then up the 70. Denver is 60 degrees and sunny. But Vail is 24 to 43 degrees and some snow on Sunday.

Is it stupid to just try it? I don’t want to throw chains.

I ran a lot of round trips to the upper Midwest out of LA.

The best route for fuel economy is drop down to KC, take I-35 (Kansas Turnpike) to Wichita, then run west on US-400. When US-54 spits off to the southwest (east of Dodge City) take US-54 all the way across the Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles to Tucumcari, NM. Then I-40 west to Barstow, and I-15 down into the LA basin.

Diagonal routes are at a premium in the Midwest. US-54 to and from Tucumcari is a favorite.

By the way, I'm taking a 10 right now near Fort Morgan, CO. Thunderstorms will bring snow by the wee hours. Precipitation will taper off by morning and warm above freezing.

Why not just take 80 over to 15?

March is actually the snowiest month for the east side of the Rockies.

Worst case scenario. You go through the tunnel and over Vail. It snows like B. It freezes. Your stuck in the middle and have no choice but to chain. Your on your way over, and Swift is completely out of control, crashes into you, you go over the side, burst into flames while falling a few hundred feet down the rock face.

Best case scenario. It doesn't snow.

Wyoming isn't exactly a picnic either. Doesn't even have to snow with the wind blowing yesterdays snow over the road.
That's the way I would go.

IluvCATS, Lepton1 and bzinger Thank this.
