I am wanting to make a career change and start driving. There is one truck driving school within 200 miles of me and I was given the impression that I could sign on with a particular trucking company and get "company paid cdl training". I contacted the school to see if they could recommend a good company to go with and they said no. They informed me that they don't do company contracted cdl training and my options were either pay cash or get a government unemployment grant to go for free. I have a job though. I don't want to quit until I get ready for school. why would the trucking company tell me that they will handle everything and pay the school and the school tell me that they don't do that sort of thing?

welcome to talking with recruiters. Only thing I can think of unless they are using a different school.

The recruiter might also be referring to a company tution reimbursement their company may offer to new hires who acquire a CDL on their own. Just a guess.

Some schools are more flexible than others. One of my classmates paid with a grant from Werner, another paid using his GI bills and I wrote a check (well, my mother did, but I paid cash).

Many of the trucking companies will provide something like $100 per month tuition reimbursement while you work for them, as long as you can prove you paid for it.

I tried to get training funds from the government through unemployment and it seems that training funds did not make it into the 2012 budget, so they could not get any for me, even though I was a veteran (which put me at the top of the list).

    Good luck!

Have you considered Prime Inc. in Springfield? They do company CDL training.

It's kind of a misleading statement. The company will pay, but only after you have gone to school and signed up with them. That way they don't pay for someone, then they go with a better offer. Now if you go with the company training, i.e. Stevens, Werner, the school is free, but you have to work for them for a year.

Absolute best thing you can do is go through a independent school. You are in no way binded into a companies contract and go wherever you please.

The school is basically saying they don't endorse or contract with any carrier, but their program is authorized by specific carriers as a approved schooling (protecting themselves from "get your CDL in 24 hour type cdl mills)

That school sounds fly by night and probably isn't accredited. Too lazy to set up a referral system.

Like anj said, I would look at community or technical colleges in your area that offer truck driver training. You qualify for gov't financial aid which is more flexible paying back, get better training and aren't committed to anyone.

Then you can take employment where you get reimbursed.

Some companies reimburse you for tuition, after you finish school and hire on, by paying you $25-$50 a month, until you're paid off.

I don't want to thread hijack, but you guys are saying that the best thing to do to get started is to go to an independent "accredited" school, then work someone and possibly get tuition reimbursement? Also, is there a list of some sort that shows the good schools to go to, the ones that are "accredited" that companies will hire graduates from? Which companies would you guys recommend or stay away from? One other thing, is it usually a bad idea to do one of those "pay us for training then we'll hire you and you can work the debt off for a year" deals? I heard one guy say that he did that with CR England and the school was terrible and he got fired soon after and had to pay for his training at 18% interest. Any advice would be appreciated.
