I need more hometime, any suggestions for a good company?

    While I don't have any companies to recommend, I can believe that. That stupid Bendix system always used to lock up on me in Nebraska in Fremont (just north of Omaha). The FCC drivers will know it, Highway 275 going southbound to the Love's in Valley, NE. It's been a while but it was a bridge either a few miles before you passed FCC Terminal on the highway on the right side or a few miles after. It's not even a low bridge either, if I had to guess around 15' - 16'. Not even close to the 13'6 limit. That dumb Bendix system would lock the brakes up when I passed that particular bridge (despite no traffic being on the road that time of night) every single time. Each time I had to prepare for it. There was another bridge on I-88 where the Bendix would lock up, it was close to the Love's in Rochelle, IL. Just like the bridge in Fremont the bridge close to Rochelle was around 15' - 16'.

    So stupid and 100% unsafe.

    Sometimes. Used to go there quite often with IRT until other companies like X-Ross and Red Stag started picking up the dairies servicing that plant.


    The boxes and reefers all sit on the South side of the plant. But it was interesting when a box or reefer would drive to the tanker bays.

    Well. I don't know how to say this, I do not want to offend, but if you have never worked a local position, especially in a Huge Plugged up city like that atlanta? Its something you will just have to experience for yourself. I have mentioned before in posts on threads about what an eye opening experience it was for me. You do it all. Load, unload, move trailers from doors, put others in a door, double check your stops your paperwork. You wouldn't think stressful right? I know, but it is very stressful. They are all short handed right now, meaning you are going to do the work of 2 drivers. I really do not want to get to into this, I could probably write a book about what I say, did, felt, and left when I got out of local truck driving in Portland and Seattle. This was before all the riots too. I resigned in 2018. (Left Trucking for a few years. Met an owner operator at a Native American Casino Golf Course, Golf Shop and Fitness Center where I was working at that time. I was in good shape after the time at Subaru Dealership Parts NW, the casino hired me almost immediately, just had to do a UA) and we team drove a fresh chicken delivery account he got from Arkansas back to the NW, for Safeway/Albertson's. Mostly Seattle or Portland/Vancouver, in his larger size volvo truck, that truck had over 875,000 but you couldn't tell except for the knobs for fan, the temp dial, blue to red, or vents, and it shook sometimes, vibrations, the drive shaft U Joint broke, (thats probably why it shook right) and the driveshaft fell out on the street in gallup, nm, after he got fueled up at FJ. I was sleeping and I thought he hit something, he got pissed when I said that too, did you hit something carl? I got up and placed the triangles out, and watched for traffic, while he called for a tow truck, and used google maps to find a shop, I went to the Motel for 3 days and he stayed in the truck at the shop. I was like wow carl? What this going to cost? He just stared at me then back on the phone. He used his credit card for everything. He made good money, especially running team, he paid me $1,600 a week gross, on a W2. Not 1099. Ok, back to the local jobs. Only approach a daycab being driven by older, fatter person. Cause the ones with the thin to very little mass index drivers, they look that way, because they bust their ### and its not for just 10 hours it can be 14 or more somedays. You have to shrink wrap pallets and stuff. Take 3 days to get over that 1 day, but you never really get that back, not really, so it keeps going that way. I can't really even begin to tell you. The restrooms look like a p-let truckstop's restroom. It's something you have to do, to find out. I am sure there are easier positions in local work, but they are usually all taken by drivers that plan on retiring on that job, and if not, their is probably a few drivers that will get the job before you will. They have been waiting longer than you. There is a kind of silent pecking order too. You don't get put into top jobs because of race, or sex, or for being lite in the loafers either, its based on time and hard work. I don't know your physical situation, but more than likely will need to toughen up, you need to move around the loading docks with ease. Flipping pallets around, loading them, hand shrink wrap them. You will probably need a forklift certification at some point, You have to Count the boxes first. Geez its endless. You have to clean trailers out, banding, wood chunks, nail, staples, its dirty, its hot, its exhausting. Do not feel bad, probably 90% of the drivers out there do not know anything about local driving jobs. The easiest jobs otr truckers see are the guys driving the forklifts, the bust ### jobs are counting, inventory, and putting those pallets together, packing lists. Etc.. Drivers mainly only see the forklift person, and the office person they hand the BOL's too. Do not take the first job offered, look it over FIRST. Ask questions, and work on your physical self, thats very important. I started that job at 45. Not bragging. I would not even think of doing it NOW. Not at 45. I didn't know. The people 45 had the kind of job you want. Show up with lunch pale at 0600, clock in. Get your BOL's, keys to the truck and gates, say hi to everyone. Go out to the Truck, pretrip, start it up, sign in to the ELD. Check Fuel first, all the guages, then get your trailer, check it all out, tug test, pull forward stop, hold brake pedal to compress the system so it can adjust, lights on 4 ways on, do your walk around, tires, lights, cycle the lift gate, make sure the pallet jack is in the trailer, make sure its in good condition too, the pallet jack, that you have enough straps, shrink wrap, in case of returns, or you might have to build a pallet of freight while you are out. Then you go out on your Route, right? Sound good? Well there is a lotmore involved than that. So maybe if you look really really hard you might find a place that has an opening like the one I just described, and that isn't a good job. Not at 45. Try 35 or younger, is that you? Do you know hard work already? Sweating beyond what you would even think you could still produce sweat? Having that wreck is going to be a issue, that's why I went into such lengths here. Do not want you shocked, or depressed if you do not fit in at a local position either, ya know? Cheer up dude. Life is a B, then you die right? This is my experience with a LOCAL driving job. Maybe you can get a shuttle job with a bigger carrier, I am just worried about the happenstance with the leaving the roadway, and hitting something? Sir, but don't give up. Can you get all the social programs that allow you to be home with your daughter in her sadness, in her loss? At least until she is ready to face life again.? Just asking. There seems to be unlimited amounts of borrowing with our present gobberment. I would apply for those. Believe it our not, I just saw 4 people under 35 jogging by 3 women and 1 man, with a dog, like Life is a bowl of Cherries. So how come they aren't at work? Still collecting unemployment? When there are jobs ALL OVER this place. Sold some bitcoin? I think welfare and social programs. There might be a program for you as well. Take care of yourself. Start working out. It will pay off later, believe me. Now that I am older, I am kind of glad I did that job now. I am long gone from that entire area and mindset. Like someone else lived those years, but NO, it was me.     If you can still physical flatbed look into delivering building materials for a lumber yard or a landscape supply house. Most of those places are much more 8-5 consistent schedule. Pay may not be that great but you’ll probably make overtime after 40.

    Plenty of chemical tanker companies in the Atlanta area. Lot of local or out and back overnight runs.

    Those braking systems are not going away either. Both the Senate (just passed) and House versions of the Infrastructure bill mandate the FHWA to get going on mandating that all new trucks are equipped with that garbage.
