I've been talking with a swift recruiter and I've done everything she has told me to do, went and got my cdl permit, passed the dot physical and completed swifts on-line cdl course. She is setting me up to start the Millington school in Dec. I assumed since I passed the dot physical then everything was fine aside from what I've already known about. I had high blood pressure but now I'm on medication for that and I have a small tear in my abdominal wall that some fatty tissue pushed through a little which caused a lump in my stomach, it is some kinda of hernia but I don't know the medical name for it. I am still functional, and can work with no problems. The dot Dr. did a urine test to check my cholesterol and sugar for diabetes and he said everything was good but since my dot physical (which was 3 weeks ago) my regular Dr. did my blood work and he said my cholesterol and sugar was a little high but not high enough to register with a urine test. I have never had a DUI or an accident, I have'nt had a ticket in over 7 yrs, I don't do drugs or drink alcohol. I'm 6' 245 lbs and I walk 2 miles a day and I feel pretty good. My recruiter knows about my blood pressure and I'm gonna call her tomorrow to tell her about my stomach and what my Dr. said about my blood work. I just want to be honest about everything but at the same time I really need to start school before things get really bad financially. Is my chance of starting school down the drain.

I wouldn't think so..although you will get another DOT physical when you arrive in Millington on the 1st day,as well as a piss test. The doctor WILL check your stomach by pressing on it,, just don't cry out in pain,,lol
You should do fine, just don't worry and get your blood pressure sky high.

This could be a much bigger issue for you, you will be lifting, loading and unloading it's part of the job. What are you going to do when, it tears more under stress your going to be rolling around on the floor of a nasty dirty trailer that may not have anybody to call or assist you. Hernias are not a issue for a driver to ignor it will kill you eventually.

The normal DOT (Physical) urine test is not normally a drug test only. They are looking for drugs.

Time to start your education about trucking, rule 1, keep your mouth shut, if it ain't printed out on a medical, DMV, or DAC shut up they do not need to know it will only complicate your life. Do not volunteer information these people are not your friends, they are there to put drivers into trucks, they will not side with you they will always side with the company. If they don't ask they do not want to know, just so you. This is not the time to get say anything that is not ask for.

well, since you're going to tell your recruiter, you'll now need a letter from your doctor saying none of this will effect your ability to work. He/she will need to be specific about lifting, climbing etc.

Frankly......stop telling your recruiter everything and stop going to the doctor for anything that isn't urgent. Also keep in mind that the determination of whether you get hired by Swift isn't made by the recruiter. Yes they are the first step but frankly that recruiter doesn't know much about the medical reasons you can be eliminated.

Any medication you're taking, any treatment you've had, any problem or blood & urine tests taken and expecially abnormalities must be explained and verified by your doctor.

Your problems at this point medically that Swift will note are: high blood pressure, the now threat of possible diabetes, some stomach abnormality that could be a hernia and thus prevent you from working OR that will worsen during work and become a workman's comp issue OR that Swift insurance would have to pay for to have repaired.

What you needed was a DOT physical and a letter from your doctor explaining your blood pressure is controlled by medication. You didn't need a full physical that discloses more health issues.

    I wish you success.

To the best of my knowledge, you can't hide that hernia.

Might as well just get it fixed now !!!!!

It will be a problem if you don't !!

Hello Nana, I've been trying to get my stomach fixed for a few years now but with no insurance it's just not possible so it's not like I'm just running around getting physicals for no reason. The only reason I was gonna tell my recruiter anything was because I read so much on here and everyone seems to say just be straight and honest with the recruiter. If thats a bad idea then I'll just keep my mouth shut. I really want to become a truck driver. As far as my cholesterol, the dr. said it's just a little high but if I watch what I eat then it will go down, and the same with my sugar. I'm not a diabetic it was just a little high. The only medications I take is for high blood pressure, so I'm not to worried about drugs coming up in my urine test and that's the only reason I told my recruiter about that because it would be found anyways. As for my hernia, the only way to feel it is when you push on the center of my stomach, the dot dr. felt it and asked if it hurt or anything and I said no (and it really doesn't) and he passed me. My only concern is how picky will swift be? Will they want copies of my medical records? So here are my problems.
1: High blood pressure. I'm on medication for it.
2: Cholesterol and sugar are a little high. Not high enough to show in a urine test only a blood test.
3: Small hernia in the center of my stomach that can be felt if you push on it. But I can still lift and move things with no problem and no pain.
I just don't want to waist my time on a bus trip to Millington if theres no possible way for me to pass. Do you think I will pass with these issues? Thanks for any and all advice.

Texas-Nana you did not offend me at all, I read alot of your posts and I really want your opinion. I'm just trying to figure out if I have a chance getting hired. I'm suppose to leave next month but I just don't want to waist my time for nothing. So come on and be completely straight with me. I listed my issues, do you think I'll be waisting my time?
