I also mis-spoke. The tarp pay is $25. I apologize for the error.

It is when you consider, I was sitting next to a guy in a TA negotiating a load, and he said if it needed tarped, he was gonna need a couple hundred bucks for it. Can't remember the exact dollar amount, but all I could think was..."Holy crap, these places pay that much, and these drivers spend an hour or more strapping, chaining, and tarping a load, and only get $25. That sucks."

That's typical with anything in trucking. It's how the companies make money. You know that $10 insult we get for stop pay? They are charging the shipper around $150 per extra stop.

I had a job in the 80s that paid us $15 for first extra stop, $25 for the next one and $40 for every one after that. Even Heartland was paying $15 in the 90s. Its like things are going backwards. Just like tarp pay is about the same it was 30 years ago and you know the companies are charging more and more.

And they'll keep doing it, so long as we keep working for it.

Yeah thats the way its always been in trucking they only pay you 40 or 50 to unload but will pay a lumper 250. as far as flat bed the weather would be my main concern rain snow cold wind etc when tarping but the miles they say are better and its more per mile.i dont know just something to decide on i guess

Think of it as something to get you in the door. You are not commited to stay on flatbed forever. After six months you are free to bid on anything that comes open. It took a few years but I have lucked into a couple of good situations. Just a matter of being in the right place at the right time,

Thats right I am undecided bout regional van or flatbed. I have experince in everything but flatbed and I kinda want to try it that way I would have experince in everyting most companys offer and to me it would be job security. Just trying to find a good company to finish my carreer at and from everything I have read from you and bigmike it sounds like averitt is that place.

Why do weekends go by so stinkin' quickly? It was a great one for sure but I headed out Sunday morning for Raleigh, NC. Had a 0500 delivery and didn't want to drive all night. Delivered at the customer and when I was backing into the dock one of my drive tires blew. After getting unloaded they headed me over to the Raleigh yard and had a service truck meet me there to get it replaced. Ended up being dispatched to Norfolk VA to pick up a load headed to Blue Ridge Summit, PA. I am tucked in at one of the TA's north of Richmond on I-95. Will head to the customer in the morning. I have until 1400 to deliver but figure I'll be there by 1100.

I have given thought to trying flatbed with Averitt but I just don't know. It would be great exercise and Lord knows I need it but the whole tarping thing doesn't appeal to me...especially in snow, wind, etc. I think I'll stick with dry van and if I make a change one day it will probably be to tankers or hauling doubles for somebody.
