I have seen TONS of people who have said "trucking is my second, third or fourth career." As I have become more and more curious I was wanting to start a thread to see what areas and walks of life all the truckers had before embarking on this journey.
I was in the Car sales business....before considering the trucking life....
NEXT....
I am excited to see what you all did in your PAST LIVES
I was a _________ before trucking....

My boyfriend grew up working in his grandfather's bakery from the time that he could walk, and then spent almost 30 years as a chef running all sorts of kitchens before he went into trucking.

Excellent thread idea. Hats off to ya, acw.
For me, the better question would be what didn't I do before driving.
I have touched on many careers before finding my niche in trucking.
Here's an abbreviated list of career fields/job titles I've held:
Food service - burger flipper, bus boy, pizza delivery boy, waiter, dishwasher
Construction - general labor, computer networking cable installer, carpenters helper, painters helper
Manufacturing - machine operator, assembly line team member, QC lab tech, computer configuration tech
Warehouse - order picker, replenisher, truck loader, fork lift operator
Clerical/Office - telemarketing, inventory control coordinator, shipping clerk, data entry specialist
Medical - Sleep disorder center tech (aka polysomnography technologist) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polysomnography
Driving - cab driver, truck driver

I ran a cleaning business in the bay area for many years and worked at the Oakland Coliseum in guest services. I quit all that to get a networking degree and found I hated working in an office. (I did absolutely nothing with my degree except complete an internship at the end of schooling)
For the last 4 or 5 years I have worked at productions jobs that didn't pay and that I didn't stay at. I have wanted to get a commercial licence since around the time I was getting my degree.texasbbqbest Thanks this. -

I'm not a truck driver yet but will be in about 7 months. I start school in July. Right now I'm an auto mechanic in the Air Force. Before that I worked in a machine shop as a lathe operator. I also had a couple of part time jobs; one at a Blimpe sub shop and one as a tire installer at Pep Boys.
