    1 year, and you're a master.>??

i think it's time you packed your bags and called it quits, there fella.

no one "masters" anything out there.

    you "LEARN" each time.

the road you traveled yesterday will not be the same road tomorrow.

Been driving for 5 years and still learn new things.
I’d rather be cautious than be over confident.

    Indeed.

Tooting one’s own horn has a funny way of being a harbinger of trouble.

Different people learn at different rates. It's ridiculous to assume that all truckers learn everything they need to know at the same times as we all come from different backgrounds. Trucking is a highly respectable career choice but it isn't exactly rocket science either. You can learn and master new things at an expedited rate if you practice a lot and dedicate time to researching certain aspects of trucking.

It's true, overconfidence and pride can inevitably result in disaster; that's why it's good to continue to fear things like winter/mountain driving. But not having any self-confidence whatsoever is equally deadly because if you don't trust your skills, you won't be able to execute the right decision at the right time.

Driver, do you possess the skills to safely navigate the mountains during inclement weather? Yes or No?

Skill- the ability to do something well.
Mastery- the authority of a master
Master- someone qualified to teach apprentices
    -one having authority over another
    -having CONSUMATE skill
-one who understands the details, technique, or principles of an art and is competent to act as a critical judge

To the Master, it would be rocket science.

That is the very essence of the problem. There has never been a reason to smoke your brakes. I wouldn't say idiot proof, technology has done nothing but encourage the use of said idiots. When I was a kid you could make a truck do anything you wanted, including burning itself down. The pyro wasn't just another idiot gauge that was just there for looks. Modern trucks won't let you do that anymore, they'll shut down before that happens. Cool, technology is awesome. Until you take so much thinking out of the job, people can't figure out how to make to the bottom of a mountain without smoking their brakes.

There used to be a sign on top of that pass that showed where fatality accidents happened. I'd bet those guys thought 25 was to slow too.

Unfortunately, while the DOT is busy pushing a regulation mandating new drivers go thru a trucking school, NO ONE is regulating the schools. They teach these new drivers just enough to make them think they know what they are doing, and therefore make them dangerous.
