idling your truck

    Who is "THEY"?(I'm guessing "they" are the people you are going buy parts from/pay to rebuild) My Caterpillar operators manual says 1000-1200 rpm when ambient temp is less than 20 degree's, not for my comfort but to maintain optimum operating temp. Long term cold idling(less than 170 deg.) causes accelerated cylinder/bearing wear.

    The engine requires about 1,000 rpm (min) to create enough compression to ensure proper contact between the rings and the cylinder walls. Without that contact the cylinders lose the crosshatching and get glazed causing all sorts of engine problems, a long list of bad...
