I have read all the post about the "bottom feeder" companies and still donot understand how they are able to keep the doors open if they actually have that high turn over rate, wrecked and abandoned trucks, late freight, etc.

I understand they have numerous other people to fill the seats, but are the customers happy? What Am I missing here? Any other business you would be out of business. In return i could see the way they do things would allow them to charge alot more cheaper price, versus a comapny that has a proper paid and trained driver.

Some shippers care about low freight rates and nothing more. Many of the bottom feeders are working on sheer numbers of trucks, or end up being around for short amounts of time, and reopen under a new company name.

You gotta' remember, the general public has no idea how a business runs, whether it's a trucking company or an airline or a restaurant. The shipper just calls for a truck and loads his freight on and the truck leaves the lot and that's the end of it. Do you think the shipper is aware that his load may go VIA rail, or how about a wrecked truck that flipped over and the load was transfered to another truck and delivered as normal? The shipper sends his product then the consignee waits for the product to be delivered. JIT consignees might cry if the load is late, but loads destined for inventory are no big deal if late. Look at the rail roads with their terrible safety records, what with derailments all the time and lost rail cars and demolished rail cars. Yet, shippers still clamor to send their product by rail. Think of a shipper that send his product out at noon Monday, thinking his load is rolling, when in reality, it's just going to the trucking company's drop lot 10 miles away and sitting for 36 hours waiting for a team to pick it up and go.

To a degree, "turnover" rates are misleading. If a company has 100 trucks and 50 drivers are long term employees but, they have to go through 200 new hires to fill the reamining 50 seats that's 100% turnover. Their driver retention percentage is terribly small yet, 50% of their seats are permanently filled.

It starts to get silly when you realize that one of the big "bottom feeder" companies has around 17,000 power units.

How many long term, experienced drivers do they have that are actually out there doing the job on a day to day basis?
