where would you go to start driving?

Doing a career change to truck driving and we can go anywhere. We would like to avoid coasts, are considering Texas (Midland, Amarillo), Kentucky (London), Wyoming, or Alabama (Huntsville) but we are open to most places (not the coast, not North Dakota). So where would you go? What would you drive - tanker? Start at Schneider for WalMart? There is no problem doing over the road for the first while to get experience. We just want to make sure we haven't overlooked a location or opportunity.

Amarillo is ugly and in Tornado Alley. Midland and western ND is oilpatch area, where everything has been hyperinflation prone. Wyoming has crazy weather. Kentucky is struggling since the coal mines have converted to natural gas. That means meth labs everywhere you look.

Huntsville is a nice small city and centrally located in the South. However, alabama has a state income tax.

Forgot to mention, if you live WEST of i35, odds are pretty good that you will have to go to the west coast.

I'd choose someplace in the middle, like Missouri. Plenty of trucking companies there. Cost of living is low. Very low.
You say 'we'.... either team driver, or Cybil?

I too would avoid "oil patch" areas first and foremost. Then consider income tax free states and fairly close to larger commerce centers so that "home time" is more manageable.

Tennessee would be a good choice for freight, no state income tax either I believe. It’s close to Huntsville, all kinds of freight and pretty mild winters.

You beat me to it. Las Vegas is where I chose when I decided to leave Tennessee. Plenty of trucking jobs; dozens of companies hire Las Vegas drivers. Cost of living is reasonable and no state income tax. Many nice neighborhoods to raise a family. Good weather year round.
We chose a gated community because we like to travel and are away from the house a lot.

Las Vegas is never a dull moment. The place I went to get some training was in a ghetto. The apartments looked like motels and had bed sheets for curtains. There were people walking in the street dressed in all red or all blue or whatever

It's also nice as long as you can handle the intense heat. I remember getting out of my car and feeling like I was being pushed by God himself and sent to hell.

I'll bet with all the gambling revenue coming in living expenses are dirt cheap. I heard that Summerlin is a nice area.
