I have a corporation and my corporation owns two semi trucks. For a few years I was Illinois only private carrier (carrying my equipment and my machinery or scrap metal).
When I had to go out of state I would get a fuel and trip permit.
This is getting a bit old and I want to explore getting IFTA and IRP.
Are they managed completely differently? Do I have to prepare separate reports for them?
How much hassle are they? I do 95% of business in Illinois.
I looked at this and my head hurts, enormous forms and it looks like IFTA and ORP are handled completely differently? How do you manage all that paperwork???

You use same miles for irp that you figured for the ifta report. Go online and use the forms. Just put in gallons and miles. The eforms populate everything else.
Don't forget your hvut. You will need that receipt to get your irp.
Good luck -
Thanks. What do you mean by "eforms"? Also do I go to the Secretary of State to get my IRP? thanks a lot

Eforms...electronic forms. I have my links at home. Don't remember precisely.
Once you get your routine in place, it's easy to maintain the records.
What is the difference between IRP and IFTA?
The difference is: IRP is a cooperative agreement for registering vehicles that travel into two (2) or more jurisdictions. IFTA(International Fuel Tax Agreement) is an agreement between member jurisdictions for the uniform collection and distribution of fuel tax revenues.

her's a question for you, IRP related.
I have IL IFTA and cab card through the company I am leased to.
I live in GA.
Who does the IRP? The company in IL or me in GA? -

The main thing is your IFTA and IRP mileage numbers match. If they don’t, that’s a red flag for a audit. You file your IFTA every quarter, and do your IRP once a year. Just use your IFTA numbers to fill out your IRP.
Of course every state is different, but I travel mostly in-state, and may go out of state once or twice a quarter. TN doesn’t make me complete a trip report for in-state miles, I only have to fill out a trip report when I cross state lines. I’ve been through a audit and the auditor said this was ok.
