The Indiana BMV website tells you what you need to do to get a CDL license, but not a permit. What parts of the CDL manual do I need to study for the permit? This has become frustrating because to contact the Indana BMV my email you must have an Indiana drivers license#. And try to contact them by phone!!:smt021
Sorry, venting a little bit.
Anyone that can help, I am very grateful.

didn't driver solutions send you the packet with the CDL permit guide and the study section for the written part of the MV exam you have to take to transfer your license to IN.?
-
it's a 30 page booklet that says "CDL guide" on the front. it has a bunch of facts and some practice questions for the gen. knowledge air brakes and combination tests. along with some facts and practice Q's for the IN operators practice test.
-
Yes, but I talked to a guy who said that guide is very different from the actual test. He said he studied the drivers solution guide and failed the permit test the first time. Then he got the In cdl book and passed first time.
My biggest questions are what areas to study for PERMIT. All including hazmat, or what?
Thanks -
i don't know about that part, the book is pretty short from D.S. i just caught a few quick facts from it . i picked up a CDL manual from the FL. DMV to study for mine. i bet your state DMV's CDL manual is very close to the same as it is mostly federal regulation.
-
I'm still in Florida for now. I downloaded the Indiana cdl manual, it is 219 pages. About the same for Florida?
BTW-Have you made any decisions yet? You can PM if you want. -

If you want a CDL-A, you have to pass General Knowledge, Combination Vehicles, and Air Brakes. you also have to have your DOT physical with you, when you get the permit.
Optional: Doubles & Triples (T), Tanker (N), and Hazmat (H).
If you have Hazmat, and Tanker, they are combined into the (X) Endorsement.
The reason it's confusing, is because these tests to get your permit, *are* the CDL Test. once you get the permit and any endorsement tests you're after, there aren't any more written tests.
Get the permit, then you're allowed to drive around in a truck with a qualified person in the passenger seat, when you're ready, you go to a third-party test site, they make you do the Pre-trip inspection while they mark off what you inspect, then you do your 4 point air brake check, (if you fail that, you're done with that attempt), then you do your skills testing, which is proving you can stop within a two foot marker line, back the truck 100 feet down a 12 foot wide alley, sight-side alley dock, then the backward serpentine, then the blind-side paralell park (Trailer Only). after that, road-test. get through all that, and he gives you forms that you take, with your permit, to the BMV, and get the magical card.
I have no help for getting a permit with an out-of-state license, however. no one in my class is in that situation. one guy who still had his illinois license, got it coverted to indiana, then started after the permit. I would suggest, however, that you give up on contacting anyone in Indianapolis, and just call a branch directly, and talk to someone who actually knows what they're doing. -
Thank you everyone for your help. Now i understand. And yes I do have to convert my license to In before getting the permit.
Thanks again
