Hi everyone, so long story shory, my CDL is only 3 months old and I have a hard time getting insurance for myself.

With the help of my parents, I bought a truck just today, signed for it and everything. So there’s no turning back at this point. Then I called the insurance company my dads insured under, and immediately they came back and said no because I don’t have 2 years under my belt.

I know I’m gonna catch some flack about not getting the experience, but my dad doesn’t want me working for the mega carriers, and chose to train me himself. But wasn’t aware of the 2 year insurance policy.

basically, would there be any company that would insure the truck that i bought under my dads name, that would operate under his authority, or did I screw this up astronomically?

    appreciate the help everyone!

Nothing wrong with driving for a mega. Some are pretty good and have drivers that have been there for years, even decades.
Many drivers that complain the most about megas have never driven for a mega.

Find an independent agent. I was quoted from several different companies, and none asked about my experience.

BTW, I had NO experience driving. Progressive had the best rates for me

Keep calling different companies. When I started out I used farm bureau. No questions about age of authority or anything, but I was hauling local.

If you are planning on doing OTR it might take a few phone calls or a good stack of money

Seems everyone that has posted on here about first time insurance company’s, Progressive seems to always be on top, BUT….. it’s gonna cost $$$$$$$. Dad was trying to do what’s best, guess both of you didn’t do your research. There are a lot of threads on here about this same topic about first time insurance companies. Use the search feature on top. You should be able to get more 411. Goodluck….

Here is what you should do, have his insurance company insure the truck and you become his employee. Pay him the increases.

No offense, but dear old dad is a bit out of date, for an O/O today, insurance is only one of the many obstacles you'll face. Fuel expected to skyrocket ( again) and repairs @ $150/hr. adds up quick. It took me 15 years before I bought my own, and regretted it from day two. How I made it 4 years was a miracle, and THAT WAS 20 YEARS AGO. I don't mean to be brash, but at 3 months in, you have no business buying a truck, unless dad owns the company you'll be pulling for. You couldn't possibly know what to expect, and I'll tell you, pal, it's a lot easier buying one than selling one. Please don't say you bought a Volvo. Chinatown is our voice of reason, you should have driven for a company for a spell. You are doing it the hard way, and I feel, a truck purchase today is one of the most foolish investments in a shaky society a person could make. Good luck, you'll need it.

You can still 'own' it and register it under his company IRP account...I worked one place where a 'relative' had two trucks leased on; one in his name and the other in his wife's but both on his IRP account [and insurance, etc.] but still showing her as the owner of the one truck on the registration.

If your operating under dads authority it is his responsibility to provide liability and cargo. You pay your own comp
