Landstar wants $1695 for an Illinois tag, I think I can get my NC Tag for about $1299 (at least that is what my current leasee paid for a NC tag) is it worth it for me to go through the trouble of getting an IRP # and my own tag or just get it through Landstar?

I think the law requires you to be licensed under Landstar's operating authority. This would include the base plate, IRP, and IFTA. I would certainly address this with them. I am sure they have run into it in the past. -
Is an IRP number the same as having your own authority? Would I then take Landstars IRP number into the NC DMV and get my tag? -
You get the IRP number with the base plate. Landstar is based out of Illinois and they have an office here. Landstar Ranger is located in Jacksonville, FL. Their base plates are located in Illinois under Landstar Incorporated address of Rockford, IL.
Illinois advised me if I exceed 26,000 lbs and have to have apportioned plates, they have to be provided to me through the company I am leased to which is in Indiana. I would not be able to have Illinois tags because of the corporate location. -
I'm not an expert by no means, but i've read many post about running your own plate should you move you still have your own plate. I've always ran my own,but its been awhile. Could be landstar policy although.

The upside to using LS's plate is they deduct the money over the course of several weeks for the plate. Buying your own you must have ALL the money up front when you buy the plate.
Not at all. LS doesn't even require you to use their plate. They are more than happy to get one for you if you want them to.
When I leased on with them I had 6 months of plate left on MY plate. I was not going to throw that away and repay to use theirs. -
I was told by Illinois in April that my truck would have to have Indiana plates if I wanted apportioned even though I owned and lived in Illinois. -
Sounds to me like IL is confused..... normal occurance at the DMV. -
Never let a company buy a tag for you period. Why? If the lease is cancelled then you have NO way to legally move the truck.
I don't believe there is a law that requires you to base plate out of state that the company that you are leased to is based in, I've never done it nor did we ever require our owner operators to. You will be under their IFTA account not yours as long as the lease is in effect. Be sure to READ the lease before you sign it ,and check to make sure it's in compliance with the truth in leasing laws. If it's not, then there is an issue that needs to be addressed before you sign the lease. Hindsight is 20/20.

Landstar will allow you to run your own IFTA if you want. You just have to provide them with the records to show that its being done.
