central may be a rat hole bottom feeder of the FREIGHT industry, but the freight side of trucking is way ABOVE anything in truckload. most truckload companies are a joke, plain and simple. don't even look at them like a possible long term job. If you go with central, and get some experience running p&d routes in your area, you will be a very valuble man to other freight companies in the area, eventually. even if others are not hiring right now, go get your feet wet at central, and look for better freight jobs down the road.
I would still go with central, if no other freight companies are hiring. even if you had your truck break down on a miserable night, like what lonesome said, you at least know you are being paid, and at the end of your shift, you can hop into your own ride, which hopefully has heat, and then drive home, and sleep in your own bed, which hopefully also has heat.
Is central transport good for a newbie?

First of all if it dosen't matter go with Crst. Hell Get on Trans am great lease purchase program. But when it does matter were you get your feet wet duck .We all have choices. And when its you or your family look only for that criteria that makes it just for you. Pay home time the thingss that really matter. You And then there's the truck . And only fools rush In. Especially an ugly truck.

since you are in the south, if you want to try other career style trucking jobs, look into wilson trucking, southeastern freight, and AAA Cooper. I guess Averitt runs LTL freight in some of the bigger southern cities as well, but i wouldn't trust them, as the only averitt trucks i ever see are sleeper cabs. As well as those, contact estes, ups freight, conway, and any other freight companies that i didn't think of.
LTL freight is the only way to fly, if you want the most money and hometime in trucking, at least as far as driving a company truck. certain other stuff pays well too, and gets you home, like hazmat tanker, and possibly local steel hauling, but that depends on whats around your hometown.
plus, if you gain experience in local p&d, its job security. you might not work for the same company 5 years from now, but if you get the p&d experience, you should be able to peddle freight for any company in town. I had a friend who was let go for bs reasons that were not his fault. a week later he was hired at a better company, because they knew that he has experience running in the area, and knows how peddling freight works.walleye Thanks this. -
Hopefully your local Central Transport branch manager will be willing to hire you without exp. The manager at my local Central terminal wants 1 yr. exp. #####****!
Try seeing if your local FedEx terminal has a driver apprentice program. Check online. FedEx is much better than Central. -
I start tommorrow at the sacramento terminal, tractors look allright, trailers look like ####.
Ill be unloading my own trailer. getting paid 17 something an hour to do it too. -
Lostone9 are u running p&d

I worked for Central before. They are are okay. You can make killer money but you work for it. Most require experience and you usually start out as a driver/dock worker. P&D jobs go by seniority. I worked out of Kenosha, WI and drove to Hammond, IN every night, worked the docks and drove back in the morning. I made $21 hour and .64/ mile. Pay is based by region. There was drivers that come up from Indy to Hammond and they made like $17/hr

Line, just going from my terminal to another than back. Kinda boring doing the same thing everyday, but I'm sick of not watching my kids grow up. I'll be making a flat rate plus 17.50/hr for unloading my own trailer. comes to about 200 bucks a day. and benifits at 90% paid. Thats better than I made OTR or regional.
