I am a fuel hauler located in Calgary. Started fuel in early 2011. I’ve found this work to be very stable. I’ve never experienced a shortage of highway fuel hauling work. (Even now with all the chatter on here about how slow it is for everyone, and apparently nobody hiring. - 2025 has been my best year to date).

I am in a regional highway position pulling B-Trains. (Sleeping in the truck all week operating in AB, SK, MB). The majority of my deliveries are to Bulk Plants. (Storage facilities in rural areas where small straight trucks load). Pay is $34 an hour, with daily & weekly overtime, full benefits and pension.

In my opinion it is better to work hauling for a fuel dealer than it is to work for a trucking company that hauls fuel. - Two different business models. A fuel dealers main source of revenue is selling fuel; they lower their expenses by having their own employees haul the product they buy/sell. Generally speaking, they’re usually better to work for because they’re not a trucking company.
    • A trucking company that hauls fuel operates just like any other type of trucking company. Their main source of revenue is running the truck, so they aim to run it 24/7 if they can, competition is fierce so profit margins are low, which leads to lower wages, basic model equipment purchases, and overall operating and treating drivers just a freight hauling company does.

That being said, there isn’t very many good fuel dealer employment options in Calgary. Edmonton has more options.
Do not work for 4Refuel. - They don’t have a good reputation. Jepson is iffy. KAG and Seaboard are just like going to work for any big freight hauling company.

One of the UFA dealers might be decent. Or one of the following fuel dealers: Bluewave Energy, Robertson Bulk, DMM Energy.
    - These would all be local multiple delivery positions. (Tandem axle meter truck delivering to farms, construction sites, industrial, etc).

Gas station deliveries are usually done by trucking companies. Which as I mentioned, are typically not that great to work for.
Bossco Fuels might be worth considering for gas station work.
    - Costco is currently serviced by KAG.

Lastly, the work is not back-breaking. Yes it does require labour to some extent, but it is not at all strenuous. I find it to be a decent amount of activity to keep me in decent physical shape.

Thanks for the reply bud, this is pretty much what I've come to realize fairly quickly. I think I had some delusions in my head, thinking there might be an option similar to the US with Gemini (Loves) or the Maverick/SinClair fleets.

Also like my recruiter friend told me, my dump job is actually pretty awesome, and he doesn't think I will find a better opportunity right now. I would like to make $40+/hr, but to do that, you need to be on the private company fuel/lube trucks, and willing to submit to their insane schedules.

I have an Interview with Sunbelt Rentals next week, for future Class 1, Daycab/Tri Axle Tilt trailer work. (They're expanding big time in Calgary).
