I feel like trucking is an industry where hard working members of society can become their own bosses pretty easily, or work for someone who is blue collar, not looking to make multi-millions nor be a slave owner.

Sadly I feel like this is dying in our industry. Especially now with the mandatory e-logs.

We all need to get our foot in the door, but at the end of the day, all of us who are working for these major carriers are contributing to the death of the trucking spirit.

Maybe I'm being over dramatic, but the only thing in doing behind the wheel of my swift truck is helping a few people make millions by paying me and ten thousand others unsatisfactory wages.

And if I quit and go to a smaller carrier there will be ten people waiting in line to fill my spot.

Sometimes capitalism feels less like freedom and more like a subtle form of slavery. We are just the ### end of a joke that people like jerry moyes giggle at every day.

most any job ,you work to make the board members and owners money.

most owner/ops, lease to someone else.

have to have your own ,(paid off), truck ,trailer, authority ,freight contracts, to be self-reliant.

Do 12 months max at Swift, move on to a better carrier. It does not take long to move up a bit. Trucking is a hard way to make a living, but some days it seems so #### easy, like pimpin'.

Stay out of debt, then you’ll have the freedom to work where ever you wish.
Most people are trapped in their jobs as they are slaves to debt and can’t afford to move on.

I think you are over thinking things a bit much and feeling rather badly or poorly about it.

First of all, The elogs does not change anything except one little problem, you are out of hours it will be documented without your input. So you sit. The Hours of Service has not changed. The shippers and recievers continue to abuse drivers and not respect the value of their time as always.

What is this major carrier you speak of? One with 30,000 trucks built up from one over decades? 30,000 trucks is a huge finanical resource or drain however one looks at it. I would not want to be owning 30,000 trucks. Get up in the morning and learn maybe 5% are running late and it's not even 7 Am yet. I don't know what 5% of 30,000 people is...but I need more people to handle these problems. There is literally not enough hours in a day to handle all of them myself with a cell phone.

If So and So in charge of the mega is making the so called few millions of dollars? More power to him. He also has to spend millions too. Refer back to the 30,000 truck fuel bills rolling in... for example. I ran for a smaller fleet out of Batesville AR when I first came here to this state to take a shot at it, he was the owner of about 200 plus tractors of late model and the then new T2000's plus a whole bunch more of great dane reefers scattered all over the Nation. What won me over to join his company was that empty truck yard. It had a spot for all his trucks and only a few were parked there for shop purposes.

JB hunt in Protho Junction has dozens of bobtails parked in corner not being used, slowly rusting. They are probably still there to this day still parked. You will never meet the owner of JB, but you would certainly get to know a smaller fleet owner and his family given enough time.

Trucking spirit is still alive and well, in those of us old enough to still have it. Some will probably post here just to tell me off saying :Speak for yourself... eh... I remember a time way back when growing up in the 60's truckers were making sure to help those who needed it in some way. That was ingrained into me, I ended up helping who knows how many in small ways myself. I don't know if they ran off and bought a drink or drugs with some of that money or actually used it to feed their kids. It's not my concern. I hope they fed the kids. They better actually.

    Anyhow...

You said yourself you can buy one truck and eventually get a foot in the door. America does have a opportunity for anyone to come here and build a company. Unfortunately there is enough of problems that we need 50,000 laws passed against those who cut corners or otherwise fail to do things above board.

If you yourself is doing well with the work you are doing and actually thriving, then you are doing good. There isnt much to complain about is there? How would you like to be laying awake wondering about that million dollar payroll due in the morning combined with a fresh 3 millions of dollars in fuel bills incurred while you were asleep, if you were lucky to be able to sleep at all as bills marched over the fence in your counting.

Sometimes it's great to be the little man asleep on the switch when that whistle blowing early in the morn. Rather than the frazzled mr millions spend it all express owner wondering how all these people will still have something to do after lunch.

If you want to move up fast and make a great income head to nw north Dakota and drive in the oil patch. It's hard work but you get good experience and make great money.

If the OP feels like capitalism is a form of slavery I wonder what he thinks would be a better system?
