I had to toss this out there. This week on the way home i ran into an old friend i worked with a few years back.I seen his truck and yelled to him on the CB Radio.I yelled ''hey Joey'' and he was on CHANNEL 19 in NY.We ended up stopping to have coffee as we were heading the same way.To make a long story short,i could not believe this and i was proud of him.
Back 5 years ago Joey came out of trucker school and leased his truck to a container outfit at his 1 year mark(BTT).He worked the containers for the next few years. Then he got smart and came to Landstar. He ran with Landstar for 2 years and always talked on getting his ''own numbers''.I am guilty and so are many others. We used to laugh at this kid when all he talked about was having his ''own'' business and going out alone. He left Landstar 2 years ago.
Needless to say he has 15 trucks and he is on his own THESE DAYS.He has 15 drivers and many ''contracts'' of his own.All he is apportioned for is NY,NJ and PA.He is doing very well.He got married and has a son and his 300,000 home is paid for.He showed me his yard and his office. At that moment i was a believer. The ''kid'' is doing DARN good and i am happy for him..
Now he is breaking my Gonads, like i used to break his......He said, when are you going to become a ''real'' business man...
...Again he was breaking my gonads.
In the end i see it can be done at any level. One thing i always new this ''kid'' had that us older guys didn't was ''go getter''.Joey was always a very very hard working go getting young Italian. He never stopped working and persuing better...
He has taught me that at any age and any level CDL Drivers can ''DO IT''...Not to mention he owned his 1st truck at his 1 year exp. level..
It can be done..

Sure it can be done , lots have done it ( including me ) , 1 of my sons and 1 nephew have done it in the past few years same as your friend but they all did it with HARD WORK , common sense and not the WHEN IS IT GOING TO BE GIVEN TO ME attitude.
landstar8891, Hitman, MNdriver and 4 others Thank this. -

It does happen. Not enough though. It is a combination of hard work, good sense and most times just a dumb luck feature. The right place at the right time kind of thing. You just happen to be at a shipper or receiver and the right person is there and you happen to say something and it goes from there.
Too many on here will tell everyone and anyone that they can't make it. Just as many come on here and believe that no-one could possibly tell them anything.
Around where I live there are tons of farmers. During slow times they can be found at the local restaurant swapping tales and such. I'm a city boy and know nothing of farming but I've sat with them, listened, asked questions and had more than a few stop by and show me what they were talking about. Same goes on here.TheEnglishMan, Newtrucker48 and landstar8891 Thank this. -

This business is all about connections. I don't even have my own truck but I know a few people in a few places that are ready to give me work when I do. Network network network, don't be the average doltish driver who just wants to get their freight off and bolt.
landstar8891 Thanks this. -
1) LANDSTAR in the past was a great place to learn the ropes and make connections.
2) Do not always base your decision to get a truck on the PROMISES made about getting work , not always there when you need them.
3) A lot who have made it , keep quiet about it especially on posting sites , because your either a Liar or made your $ on the backs of yourpoor mistreated drivers.

I don't think dumb luck has anything to do with success stories. You make your own luck and the sooner a person can own up to the mistakes and missteps along with the victories the sooner they'll realize that. It's just dumb luck reminds me of a comment from our dear leader about small business in general, "you didn't build that, you didn't make that".
