Invest in the antenna, don't bother with the amp until the antenna is perfected.

"....I don't necessarily need a "peak and tune" or turn down the wattage inside my virgin radio? Is that right?..."

Not sure I would feed the amp 4 watts. I think they like about 1 watt. I could be wrong but I will step back and wait for other comments

I read an article at CBRadioMagazine.com that suggested the same. The specs of the amp say it will take 4 watts, but the article says that at that level, I *could* sound distorted. My concern is I don't trust golden driver holders. How can I trust that whomever I give it to to work on won't destroy it?

if it is then you wouldn't worry about an extra miles with an amp.

    Just saying.

I like the sound of a radio running a few extra watts. You can tell a guy means business when you hear a radio like that. I honestly don't give much of a s___ about talking for 15-20 miles. Most of my communication is from one side of the road to the other

No need to retuned for SWR. Only if you change the antenna.

Yeah the 503 will be PNP also. I actually like the pre-amp they use in them as it doesn't amplify the static as much as the typical amps out there.

If you go up to the 503, you might have to power it differently. The 203p will run off cigar lighter. The 503 might not. Do homework
