If you can take the layoffs. Also do they have sleeper teams? Bottom guys at certain yards have to run sleeper team. My yard it took years to get local. 5-7 years maybe longer. Bottom guys are running team. If they don’t have teams then you can be local. Usually it’s a small hub if they don’t have teams. But small yards might not bring you back after peak also. During peak you’ll be local. I left after 4 years and I would be on layoff right now til peak. Then probably laid off after peak. Also they’ll offer you hub work or layoff. Loading packages by hand in a trailer for 8 hours a night. You have to endure a lot now to get the golden goose.

Yup, my hub I was at has about 30 feeder drivers on layoff this year. Don’t know if they’ve been called back yet.

Trucking isn’t like it was when i started in 2008 with schneider that’s for sure . Up until a few years ago you could leave one company and be hired next week . Especially with years of experience, now it can take months to find a job

My question with taking a seasonal job with ups especially now a days is does it really gave you a leg up at full time employment or will ups just use and abuse you for the busy season then kick you to the curb . With how tough it can be to get a driving job in some parts of the country. i wouldn’t quit on a small chance they will rehire you

Yes, if they keep you then you’re are in. But with how much slower they are since Ups doesn’t run Amazon anymore after peak they may let you go. But if you do a good job and they call you back. Pretty much you’re in. But it’s a real iffy thing there. If you’re young and you don’t mind looking for a job in January go for it. But it’s likely gonna be layoffs for years. Also the teamster president is saying they will strike in 2028 if UPS doesn’t accept their terms. That’s kind of what made the layoffs start cause UPS lost big customers last contract with the threat of a strike and FedEx capitalized and made UPS customers sign contracts. You can’t wait til a strike other shippers won’t be able to cover cause they’ll be overwhelmed. Customers were worried about their stuff sitting on the dock. After working at UPS they’ll wait til last minute which is what screwed them last time. Well, it didn’t screw UPS it screwed the lower seniority drivers.

Some cities they are still hiring full time drivers and like any good job, you don’t generally start at top pay. UPS has been right sizing the business, but long term it is still a solid place to work. I spent 10 years full time with UPS and I recently retired, but since I left with a rehire status I am eligible to go back for Peak season (November-January) at full pay. Most places if you are seeking a union job you don’t start at full pay. Even with 39 safe year’s driving a semi I still took a road test, but no big deal. You may not find this job on the website because it’s only for former employees/retirees returning for peak but it does show you the pay is worth waiting for. IMG_8324.jpeg IMG_8325.png
