J.B. Hunt Freight Volumes Expected to Shrink

SPRINGDALE -- Analysts predict intermodal demand will weaken in the coming months, which could slow earnings at J.B. Hunt Transport Services.

Hunt's intermodal (container via rail) segment has been the company's major focus in the last three years, setting itself apart from traditional over-the-road carriers. The shift in the company's business model paid handsomely with record third-quarter revenue of $996 million, up 12 percent from a year ago.

Thom Albrecht, industry analyst with Stephens Inc., said overall demand weakness has spilled over to intermodal carriers like J.B. Hunt, prompting him to slash his future earning per share estimates for the Lowell-based carrier.

Albrecht lowered fourth-quarter earnings estimates by 3 percent for the fourth quarter and more than 15 percent for fiscal 2009 on lower intermodal growth expectations, with a one-year target price of $30 per share, down from $38 previously.
