I dumped windows for Linux Mint some five years ago and never looked back. I do have a win10 virtual machine installed on one computer, but I've never used it.

Do you have a local charity type place that referbs and sells older systems and laptops?

Hanging out in one of my old neighborhoods helping a buddy with a house project and he reminded me about this place:
Grey Bears – Connect | Sustain | Recycle

I am thinking about picking up a used lap top from them as an upgrade to current laptop. They do a system wipe, test, and upgrade then sell for around a hundred bucks. If I find one I'm happy with will transfer a bunch of stuff over to the new one and donate this one to them.

My daughter is going to pick it up next time she is here. She knows of a charity that can use the laptop.

In that YouTube video I posted above, they discussed the tons of electronic waste generated each year. Daughter told me the other day that the charity she is giving the laptop to will even take used tablets, as well as old video cards people outgrow that will still work. The needs are that great.

I've been getting into electronics repair a bit lately. It's amazing how much stuff we throw out that could be fixed with a little bit of effort. I put new joysticks in 4 video game controllers for under $20 and 2 hours of time. To replace those controllers would have cost 12x that much.

    Effort well spent IMO.

Lot of people had Tandy computers. My first was a Tandy (Radio Shack) Color Computer. Wasn't any internet back then but you could use dial up to access message boards. I was using a 300 Baud Modem. My incoming came in one byte at a time, very slowly. Lol

Got a HP Envy 17” touchscreen laptop I bought about..8-10 years ago. Was top of the line latest and greatest back then. Been thinking to take a hammer to it and throw it in the trash bin.

I got a IMac now and will never go back to Microsoft stuff.. Not looking to turn your thread into a debate over operating systems.

I am replying because you seem to like messing with computers. If you’re at all interested in my laptop you can have it for free and I’ll ship it to you.. Otherwise it’ll just end up in the landfill where I send all my outdated electronics.

The laptop battery is worn out and takes a very long time for it to charge enough to use..

Just PM me your mailing address if you want it.

Thank you for the more-than-generous offer. I am basically already emptying a storage unit myself. If the PC will still work, I would recommend donating it. If you are still living in West Melbourne, I noticed they have a Goodwill store.

3 years ago, I moved from a 3-bedroom apartment into a 1-bedroom. I had to rent a storage space. My daughter and son-in-law have already carried a small sprinter van full of things away. That unit is paid up through July.

Awesome that you , and @kemosabi49 remember Tandy, ( then became radio shack) and unplugging the phone so you could spend painful amounts of time on the equipment they sold. Iv'e always missed the Tandy on Atlantic or Long Beach...Computing was very different .....now it is all about money. It spoiled the good parts...well TheTruckersReport, is a great site and so are all of you ! THANK YOU !
Exciting times , but its all changed , ...REM...those giant floppy disks....:D:cool:
