But if thart is really average then why is it every ups driver i have ever talked to doesn't make anywhere near that amount? I work right beside them for a couple months every holiday season, so i have talked with hundreds of them. Heck this winter several times i ran in and out of a brand new terminal for them in Indiana and the sign out front saying now hiring stated something like starting at 18.50 an hour. Is the pay scale national or is it regional?

I just glanced at the DAT Monday loads out of Chicago....and there was a load offered by JB Hunt:

    03/19 V F 41 Joliet, IL Chesapeake, VA — JB Hunt Transport Services Inc 44,000 $3,700.00
that's nothin special 3 drops that end on Friday.

but coincidentally I also found this one:

....Joliet, IL 908 Chesapeake, VA — Landstar Ranger Inc 44,000 $2,600.00
also 3 drops that end on Friday.

    What's to make of it?

As with most any good job, you don’t start at top pay from day one. Ups parcel is a teamster company and the pay is set out in the contract. Currently the contract calls for a 5 year pay progression to get to top pay. When I hired in in 2002 it was 3 years. I left a $90,000 job at Frito Lay to take this job because our plant was closing and I didn’t want to relocate to another state. Making money is something I have excelled at and I promise you I wouldn’t walk away from $90,000 to take a lesser paying job. It took me 3 years to get back to $90,000, When I topped out at 3 years I received almost a $600 a week raise since the pay in progression is a fraction of top pay. Due to the fact they can’t get openings filled in certain areas of the country there are rumors that they may change the 5 year. If you talked to 100’s of full time drivers making $18.50 an hour at ups parcel they were brand new. I spent 10 years there and had 200 people below me on the seniority list when I left. I daily talk to several of my former coworkers who are still there, some for 30 years and others for a couple years and I know what I am speaking about.

If you want more information call ups, because it is now my opinion that I know nothing valuable about ups to you as you seem to have your mind made up and nothing you learn will change it.

    Can you say double brokering?

Seems this is common practice for some Landstar lackey's?

I see this a lot from Coyote Logistics, you know, that division of UPS, the same company who apparently pays it's drivers $140,000 a year. But brokers loads out to owner operator saps with old freightliners held together with chicken wire & zipties, for a third of what they'd haul it for in one of their own trucks.

Coyote definately has a lot of garbage. But they gut some good loads to. Thats pretty much the story at any large brokerage firm.

    Could be on some lanes...

On my L.A. to Portland run, they are consistently 25% to 30% lower than what I usually get.

I always give them a chance and quote when one of their 23 year old upstarts calls me, however, it usually ends up with a goose egg :)
