Landstar used to have owner operators and drivers who will be driving for owners to have a drug test prior to going to orientation. And the owner operator pays for their own drug test. I don't know if they still require the drug test prior to going to orientation, but that is the way it was back when I leased to them.

Please don't get me wrong, I love so many things about LS. And actually the only complaint I have EVER (at least remember posting) posted about LS is the crappy dry van rates for reasons I have detailed.

I just a get a kick out of people thinking how long it takes is because they are detailed. As stated, if you are going to orientation they have a spot for you and none of the BS of we need this and that. Rank that as one of the things that is wrong with this industry.

Oh, also fun to yank on the chain every once in a while.

BTW Forty, if you happen to get the $1.5 million aircraft engine move you are welcome. I couldn't make the insurance work soon enough so told them LS was the only company I would trust with it.

Unless it was a local it won't be me. Those engines suck to tarp though.

Out of MI to Chicago. We had to provide tarps but they would tarp so to avoid damage. 370 miles, $4700, plus $500 per day detention on both ends. I don't want to ever bid these loads again because it took me 3-hours to get to the point that we didn't want it. Mercer said it would take another day and LS agent just used my numbers.

That would've been a nice shot in the arm for Christmas.

We have hauled aircraft engines. They can be a pill to tarp. They are very particular about depth of tread on tires, holes in the deck of your trailer, etc., We had one engine that required 3 or 4 tarps to full cover it. And we still punched a couple of holes in the tarps before we could get the engine delivered.

I too have hauled aircraft engines, hauled 2 loads about 1 month ago. It is my understanding that the only reason to tarp is to help protect the engine from road debris. It really doesn't matter if they get wet. Normally the forklift driver will work with you to get it tarped as they don't want you climbing all over the engine.

That sounds like a Southern Pride type of job. Was that 4700 with insurance? 1.5 mill can take a nice chunk out of that, even with Landstar insurance rates.

Yeah, included insurance at $1,300 range.

Agent said it would depend on driver just like mine. But that didn't sound right. Think he was trying to justify keeping rate higher.
