When is the last year to buy a good hard pulling motor without all the emissions crap? 2001 or older? I am thinking about a c15? It will be a Tri axle dump truck. It is to replace my old 1980's 855 cummins which I love. TIA

Most of the engines were really doing well till the '03 emissions kicked in. Cat, Cummins, Detroit, Mack, etc were all pretty good till then. Different people had their preferences and each brand had it's own unique qualities, but they were all pretty decent overall. For hard pulling, I would opt for Cat or Cummins. Or.... you could reman the 855 if you like it. If it has been a good engine for you, then stick with it. If you are wanting to move up a little, there are quite a few of us that had great results with N-14 Cummins. As a matter of fact, when the '06 ISX in my present truck gets close to inframe or rebuild time, I am going to put a reman N-14 in here in place of it. The ISX has some good strengths, but is a real pain when it comes to something going wrong. I just have had really good experiences with N-14's and am switching back to one in the future.

Have to agree HISPEED. I drove a 02 Western Star for a little while with a 6nz. The truck had 500K miles on it and it still ran very good. All stock, a nice running, pulling motor.

I liked the 475HP 3406E Cat I had much better than a 2001 C-15 500HP. Seemed to have better power and torque, and fuel mileage was slightly better too.
I have an '06 530HP ISX now, and it runs good, with good fuel mileage, but have had EGR problems.

I think its anything built after Oct 2003 is where the emissions junk begins. 2007 they tightened them up worse, 2010 they will be worse yet.

Hardlyevr, you can fix that egr prob real easy.... you "hit a big bump" and the electrical plug to the egr "falls out" :biggrin_25522:

I agree Pre Oct 03 you will be fine, I am staying with mech injected engine, so I can run pre filter WVO (waste veg oil) diesel mix to reduce my fuel costs.
The post 07 engnes are nothing but trouble costantly in the shop, especialy stay away from >07 Cats
