Just posting here out of curiosity. When it comes to leasing on to a carrier are there any carriers left out there that will lease on a ELD exempt truck? I don't have a truck at this time but I've looked around at some carriers out of curiosity and saw that a lot of them either have a ELD requirement, CARB emissions compliance or both. So just seeing if it's still possible to lease onto a carrier or if a driver of such a truck would pretty much need their own operating Authority.

Good luck finding an old truck for a decent price. You can buy a newer truck for the same price.

Local work might be your only choice. However. You might not be able to rely on getting paid.

Starting to hear alot of that lately.

Oh okay. I've seen quite a bit of pre-2000 trucks on Facebook Marketplace.. for about $30,000 or less. Don't know their condition because I haven't looked at any of them but I expect them to require some work. I was thinking about taking the strategy of buying a truck in cash bring it home and fixing it up over time until Freight rates improve. Don't know what it's like to run older trucks but I know with four wheelers I prefer classic ones over new ones.. mine is a square body Chevy.
I do appreciate your input though that's the way things appear to be so far

In the local ads around me. Price is around $100g with fresh rebuild but no papers.

Around $125+ with pto and drop axle.

I don't look at marketplace cuz they all reek of scammers.

When shopping, don’t rule out 2000, or even 2001 Trucks. The exemption date requirement is for the original engines manufactured date. My 2001 Classic is exempt. Built with a 12.7 manufactured Nov. 1999.

Lots of steel hauling carriers will lease on an older truck.

I've noticed a definite slide in older truck prices on FB. I'm wondering if insurance isn't calling the shots on that. I'm sure it's been discussed at meetings, "we can't prosecute someone without a tattle tale( OBR) and many won't put an older truck on. Intermodal wasn't too picky, rock haulers, grain haulers, any flatbed where there are no scales, but for any van/reefer freight, a newer truck is preferred.

Dunno why you’d want an ELD exempt truck.. to many new officers these says don’t know anything about paper logs, will write you up and let you fight it in court.

I just started using an eld this week. It’s so simple and easy. Working local, but occasionally need to go over 150 miles. Not enough work to even worry about the 14 hr rule. As for old Trucks and insurance. My insurance company, Northland - requires a copy of my annual inspection. Anything over 20 yrs old. Been that way for 3 years now.

Two main reasons. First one is repairability... I would like to be able to service the truck without paying Cummins $1,500 a month for ECM software access. (An actual quote from my employers shop manager.).
The second one is I would like to drive the truck With the least amount of regulations as possible. I don't want to deal with front radar, ELD and whatever Shenanigans the provider is up to, and the possibly up-coming speed limiter mandate.
