How can I lease onto a carrier and retain my authority. I think the biggest obstacle is cab card showing who is responsible for safety.???

Ironically, I had a sitdown meeting with another carrier regarding a similar situation. As we spoke about my potential on boarding with their company a few ideas occurred. They were even considering that I can keep my authority whiles operating with them carrying and shipping freight. From a cost effective means, they saw some savings on their end. Unfortunately, because of my Equipment setup, things did not pan out. I would suggest speaking to their Management, Recruiters and Owners if their willing to have a sitdown face to face meeting. Some larger carriers in these times will admit that this economy has effective every trucking company large or small as many see bankruptcies occurring weekly possibly daily. Every Carrier & O/o situation is different so it depends on their own business's situation.

What do you plan to do with your authority while you're running freight as the lease op?

The killer in this deal is insurance . You can’t put 2 separate policies with the same coverage on the same truck. As far as cab card you can lease to them and still run your plates and IFTA. The cab card will just have the new authority listed as operated by. Or you can run theirs however the cab card will have the folks you’re leased to listed as operated by. Which means you can’t just swap signs. I see the idea of wanting to make sure it’s going to work before putting your numbers on withdrawal, it just isn’t feasible even if it were doable
Short Fuse EOD and Oxbow Thank this. -
I'm leased on with Mercer. And there are several folks running their own authority, not leased on, that primarily pull Mercer loads and grab loads from other brokers only when necessary. -
Could you not work something out with them where they broker the work to you for a few more points than they would pay you as a lease op?
Win win for everyone, no? -
Run your DOT number/signs along with your IRP/cabcard/IFTA/insurance etc etc when you're hauling with your authority.
Then swap everything with the carrier's that you're leased with when you're running for them.
Your cab card is your registration. It goes with the plates/IRP/IFTA. The MC responsible for safety is whoever the IRP/plates are under.
It's really simple. Your stuff for your freight and the carrier's stuff when you're hauling for them. -
D.Tibbitt Thanks this.
