Well it doesn't help that standards are pretty lax. At least in Alberta anyways. When I got my license there was no requirement for training. I could have walked into registries, passed the written test and immediately done the pretrip and roadtest afterwards if I had someone leave a truck there for me.

Agreed, that standards are lax.
Not sure about other provinces but Ontario is at least stepping it up a bit, contrary to what the OP suggests.
