I had a guy install inserts into my block. He said he machines it so the liner has .003" to .004" of protrusion. I measured .005" consistently on all liners when i installed with no seals and 45lbft of down pressure. I told him i was concerned that it was too far out of specification but he let me know that the blocks are always wavy and have a history of blowing gaskets so he goes with that measurement. he also told me he has never had to re cut a block. Maybe i am just being a pain but i am hesitant to re assemble with the measurements i am getting. has anyone gone beyond the spec. of -0.0005 to 0.003 in. and had luck with that? not sure the -.0005 is accurate either but it comes from the Detroit manual.

I usually go close to 4 thousandths. I really doubt you'd have trouble at 5. Is this guy reputable in your area?

Also, IIRC, Detroit changed these specs to -.001 - .003 with a redesigned fire ring and torque method. I've found that you'll still have trouble pretty soon with anything under .001 no matter the torque method or head gasket.

Appreciate that. The machinist was referred to me by the machine shop that the Detroit dealer uses. He is an ex Empire Cat Machinist

I have it assembled. I questioned the torque on one of the head bolts because it kept turning. It did not neck the bolt down. I pulled and installed a new bolt and washer. The new bolt took the torque well. I do have another question about a wire that the Detroit mechanic told me retained the injector harness. I cant figure out the orientation. Does it go into the hole in the head or bolt to the Jake head on the rear? 20260923_175440.jpg 20260923_174943.jpg

The top part on the picture goes down into the hole. The bottom end in the pic will stand up, and hold thd harness.
