These questions are better answered by a hiring manager at a trucking company, not working truck drivers. Truck drivers aren't really going to know company wide info like #5, 7, 9.

Here's how I would answer your questions as a recently retired CDL driver.

#1 Varies by city, state, region

#2 Special skills may include backing long combination vehicles safely and maneuvering long/heavy combination vehicles on public roads. Communicating with trucking company via phone/text/tablet and customers via phone and conversations in English.

#3 Standard preparation for this type of job is CDL training courses, available at for-profit CDL schools, community colleges, vocational education schools, and sometimes individual employer run CDL schools

#4 Typically Class A, semi-truck driver jobs will require Commercial Driver License CDL which requires passing knowledge test on General, Combination, Air-Brakes. In addition some CDL jobs may require Endorsements for Tanker, HazMat, Doubles/Triples. Some other CDL jobs may also require training/certification on use of forklifts or similar vehicles.

#5 varies by employer and region

#6A income, being out of an office, seeing parts of the country otherwise not seen are commonly seen as benefits to this job.

#6B Dealing with traffic, passenger vehicle drivers acting in a dangerous manner on roads, long hours of work/driving, responsibility for avoiding damaging property or dangerous situations are common disadvantages of this type of work.

#7 Opportunity for advancement varies tremendously by company and region.

#8 Expected salary range for new-hire drivers varies tremendously by company and region.

#9 The affect of criminal history on getting employment varies per employer.

#10 Must enjoy/tolerate operating alone or independently to do well. Must remain calm and professional in difficult situations. Must be able to communicate professionally in difficult situations. Must observe legal and company requirements even if direct supervision is sometimes missing. Must avoid distraction while driving and avoid phone/tablet use until parked, without exception. Must

what they are probably looking for is pre-hires or companies willing to hire you after you go to Truck Driving School. You can also fill out a FASFA form and see if you qualify for any grants that are done by State run Truck Driving School's. Also, you may have to finance Truck Driving School through financial aid. That's my two cents. Best of luck
