So, I've been with Prime since February 3rd, and I'm coming up on my 8th month. I've been teamed with my TNT trainer after upgrading, and that's been fine, but my long term goal is to get into tanker. Ideally, Hazmat tanker, though I know I'd have to go to another company for that. My thinking is, get a year or more experience in food-grade tanker, so I can basically have smoothbore on my resume, so to speak.
All this time (this being my first driving job), I've been driving refer. My concerns are essentially the following;
-Should I switch now, and do more training with another trainer in tanker, or are the differences in tanker relatively easy to pick up with the 2-day 'bootcamp' training, meaning I should stay on long enough where more trainer time isn't required? (As far as I know, without finishing a year in Refer, I'd have to do more TNT with a trainer in tanker. Not that I'm totally opposed, but I'm just concerned about changing partners, basically.)
-Do any tanker drivers have particularly good dispatchers they'd suggest I try to get on with?
-Are there any tanker drivers? (I'm just kidding, obviously. But they do seem less numerous.)
-Should I stay on as company, how many miles per week could I expect, roughly?
-Is there a seasoned tanker driver in Prime that would be willing to chat with/mentor me a bit online or over the phone?
-Are there other or better questions I -should- be asking here, or to the folks in Prime that I'll be talking to in order to switch?
I'm probably doing this out of order, being as I'm making this thread before calling the tanker division, but I wanted to get some info from actual drivers before getting it from the folks at the desk, so to speak. Thanks for reading, and your insight!
Looking to switch from Refer to Tanker, got questions!
