You lose the ability to itemize on your personal taxes. As a company driver you will no longer be able to deduct per diem on your taxes. If you’re a business owner you take per diem as a business expense and you aren’t affected. As a company driver, the only way you can still get per diem is if your employer pays it. I just hired a guy and I pay him per diem on top of his base pay because of this. Kevin Rutherford has talked extensively about this. Despite what you think of KR, he has a lot of good information.

Thats my problem then because I'm a company driver.

If your deductions will be higher than what the new standard deduction will be then yes you can itemize, but if your deductions won't higher than the standard deduction, it's pointless to itemize.

Here is a more specific one Truck Driver’s Per Diem for 2018 - Filing Taxes for TruckersKB3MMX and double yellow Thank this. -
Yes, you can still itemize certain expenses. No, you can no longer claim unreimbursed work expenses (like per diem) for tax year 2018.
KB3MMX, Oxbow and Accidental Trucker Thank this. -
I’ve never itemized per diem. I count my days and partial days away from home and take the per diem deduction which 80% of $63. It’s a huge deduction and if we didn’t have it, I’d quite truck driving in a heartbeatDave_in_AZ and KB3MMX Thank this.
