Doing a bit of research at the moment and want to make a resource for other drivers. Want to see what LTL companies require dock work for line drivers. I'll update OP with answers or corrections. Feel free to add local companies I've missed.

    XPO
Seen plenty of them at their Missoula yard doing dock work for Line guys. Gonna go with Mandatory dock work. Online discussions seems to back this up.

    Estes
    Seems like a No.

    ODFL
Another No to Line dock work. Never saw a line guy work dock ever. Not sure it was even allowed.

    Central Transport
Mandatory essentially. On top of everything else with Central. According to former coworker.

    FXF
FXF PM bid runs less than 399 miles total dock work is mandatory. 400-439 total miles you have choice to work dock or sit unpaid. 440+ you get paid to sit waiting to be dispatched. All dock work is at hub, get paid delay at gate time till dispatched at start of day.
AM bid runs dock work is voluntary at home center, you get paid delay from gate time till dispatched. Some centers have AM bids with dock work. I know RKI has AM run that goes to DSM and they work dock at DSM. ~Hawkeye72

    Saia
    Seems rare to work Dock.

    ABF
Linehaul won't work dock but they do have Utility Positions that require dock work at the home or delivering terminal they are going to. ~db2681

That's what I've heard, it's based on mileage but most runs from the local guys I talked to here in my area say the runs are all usually dock work.

It just depends on the location and how far away they are from hubs (breakbulks, FACs, etc). There are some terminals where every run involves dock work and some where none of them do.

East coast and into the Midwest most of them are going to have dock work or at least enough that you’d have to have 15+ years of seniority to get a run without it. As you go further west, everything is more spread out and you’re more likely to find longer runs with no dock work required.

Oak Harbor, to the best of my knowledge, would be a 'mostly no'. The only time I've ever heard of it happening would be Friday nights into Saturday morning when there aren't any dock personnel there. I had to swing a trailer one night that had a flat because of that. One of the bids at our terminal also involved some dock work on Saturday morning, but the driver's complained enough about it to where they started bringing in a dock guy to help them out. My experience here and conversations with guys from other terminals suggest that line guys having to do dock work is very rare, but not quite non-existant.

At XPO most drivers are expected to work the dock, whenever required by management. The policy for linehaul is, if you are more than 480 mi. round trip to a dock facility, you may opt out of dock work. This has to be selected each year when a driver bids the run. If a driver does opt out, and is required to wait for loads, that time is unpaid. This does not exempt the driver from dock work at his home domicile, before or after the run.
