Or one seeks out a better paying option, then the company needs to adjust to keep their labor from leaving... Companies need to compete for labor just like any other resource used in the process... Resources flow to the highest bidder... If more drivers would "vote with their feet" and move to a better paying opportunities then the companies would need to adjust ... Or just strike... Good Luck.

    (Just an alternate view)

I don't know much about anything, but most grocery/foodservice warehouses hire a lumper service because they're NOT union. My facility does the exact same thing and I can tell you that we would run a lot more efficiently if they let the union guys unload the freight. The lumpers don't give a rat's behind how long it takes because they're getting paid peanuts to break freight.

On another note, we're currently in contract negotiations, our deal expires on June 4th. The company's proposals are insulting and I can vouch that all the drivers want is to work for a fair price.

Lumpers work for peanuts??? Wow, I'd sure love to know where all the fees go, then. I've had to pay $50 for two pallets before. Yes. Two pallets, that weren't even stacked high. Didn't need to be broken down, either.

The lumpers at our place make $10/hr, I'd classify that as peanuts in my area. Especially given the nature of the job. Just my opinion.

Well, they've limited themselves to that employment. It's not like anyone forces them to do that job.

Sure. And nobody forces you to pay $50 to unload 2 pallets, I'm sure you could do it yourself and save some cash. All about perspective, Brother.

Driver unload was not permitted there.
So yeah, I was. I'll unload it myself whenever I can, I need the exercise. Part of why I'm considering flatbed.

So why stay? Maybe another company would not be as insulting?
