Its against DOT law to drill or weld on the frames. Those 1/4 fenders are supposed to mount in the holes for yr suspension. But if your bent on making holes, get titanium bits. Slow & easy with pouring cooling water on the tip.

Only the flanges (for drilling). That's the top and bottom "lip". The side is fine.

    §393.201 Frames.

    (b) Bolts or brackets securing the cab or the body of the vehicle to the frame must not be loose, broken, or missing.

    (c) The frame rail flanges between the axles shall not be bent, cut or notched, except as specified by the manufacturer.

    (d) Parts and accessories shall not be welded to the frame or chassis of a commercial motor vehicle except in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations. Any welded repair of the frame must also be in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations.

    (e) No holes shall be drilled in the top or bottom rail flanges, except as specified by the manufacturer.

You can drill the web just fine. If you couldn't, how would you mount anything to the truck for upfitting?

You can weld a frame too. Just has to be done as per the manufacturer's repair procedure.

If you're going to drill a hole, quickest and easiest way is with a mag drill. They aren't cheap but can be rented.

Any pics? I find it hard to believe there’s no holes there for any fenders, whether empty or cross member.

The average person will never be able to tell where a GOOD welder welded a frame

    Rideandrepair Thanks this.
