I'm considering a few flatbed companies to start with. My three top picks are system in Spokane, Knight transport (not Transportation which is the large carrier) in Auburn, WA, or Melton in Tulsa. My big concern with Melton is how much they go thru WA. Since this will be my first driving experience, I'd rather be with a carrier that i can get home maybe every 2 weeks to start with or that drives by where I live in the Seattle/tacoma area enough that i can take a little extra home time from time to time. I'm wondering how much melton does this. i don't recall seeing their trucks in my area.

I used to work for knight transport. And you could run the I5 I think that's what they mainly do. And I believe knight is converting about 90% of their trailers to conestogas.

It would be great to get your opinion on them. I think they would be a good fit as a flat bed starter company. You're right that from what i can see, they don't do tarping. i think it would be a lower stress way to get into the industry.

You'll never see I5 except leaving or going home with Melton. When I was with Melton they required 3 weeks out west of i35 but that was 2 years ago.

The pay is good, but don't expect to get as new equipment as Melton or system. And they do tarp loads.

Does Stidham still run the I5? That might be another company to look at.

I can confirm Melton does go to Washington state occasionally... specifically Boeing in Pullayup, Alcoa in Ferndale, and assorted drops in the the Portland/Kent area. Not as often as I'd prefer (I'd prefer to live out there, lol). As Army91W mentioned above, you'll have to 'flag' your time off request 2 weeks in advance, after 1 week out, as most of their runs are east of I-35. It would behoove you to stay out longer at this company; more often than not, when I hear a Melton driver expressing concern over lack of miles, their answer to my follow up question reveals they go home "every couple of weeks".
