I will be making the move to Mercer in a couple of months and I'm trying to decide on a trailer. I would like to get opinions from you guys that look at the load board every day.

I'm in position to buy a new combo flat and looking at the Fontaine. Just can't decide between 48 or 53. Will a 53 give me more options there or is pretty much everything loaded on 48?

If you're going with a flat, I'd say 48. We do have some 53 freight, but from what I see, we probably have more 48 required freight than 53. Then again, I guess it depends on where you want to run. What I have seen that requires a 53, doesn't really pay any more, but then again, we have fewer people with 53s as well, so it may make you more in demand.

99% are 48'. The few 53' loads that we have I couldn't say would offset the cost of the trailer. Now with that said I have said I wish I had a 53' conastoga. But that is just because of a specific customer that we have.

If the cost is similar...get a 53. From what I've seen we have very few customers that require ano longer than a 48...but a few that require a 53.

If it cost a good chunk more than a 48...I'd have to analyze it and try to figure out how long it would take to recoup that extra money. Off the top of my head...I'd say id be willing to spend up to 3k more if everything else is equal. Anymore than that and it would take so long to break even it isn't worth it.

    Thanks for the replies.

It costs $1500 more for the 53. Should have put that in the original post.
