Union Troubles 1953
In 1953 the Norfolk terminal was the only terminal that really had any real union the union pulled out of the Newport News terminal. However around that time the union was working on a new national health and welfare plan. However Earl Jr, knew the plan was crooked and the money was going to the mafia to finance mafia projects.
Earl didn't really care for that and decided he would not support that.
The union at the union level didn't care for that and decided it was time for a strike. The union workers at the Norfolk terminal said no were not going to strike. That night the union sent out it's thugs to intimidate and scare the 20 employees at Old Dominion Norfolk into striking.
However Old Dominions management and other team members ran down to the terminal and crossed the picket line and got the terminal up and running. They hired new people and other people despite protestors protesting against Old Dominion, but it didn't stop Old Dominion and by the late summer of 1953 the union was busted and that ended Old Dominion ended it's association with the unions.

Old Dominion into the 1950s Chapter 3 Continued.
So while they lost Big Earl, got some freight and busted the union, Old Dominion was having an okay start to the 1950s, but in 1954 there only salesman Pete Woodlief was recruited by another Virginia based LTL carrier known as Estes Express lines you may have heard of them.
Anyhow Estes was going to pay Mr. Woodlief $125.00 a week and Old Dominion couldn't match that,so Mr. Woodlief left Old Dominion and did a really good job of moving all of Old Dominions freight over to Estes. Now this was a little bit of a step back, but Earl Jr, took over for Woodlief and then hired a new sales guy named Hunter MacNamara and in 1954 OD was back on solid ground. The Shadow, Texas_hwy_287, McUzi and 1 other person Thank this. -
Old Dominion 1956
Around 1956 Old Dominion was interested in expanding it's reach beyond Norfolk, VA and they got wind of a fairly big trucking company named Bottoms-Fiske that ran pretty heavy in the Carolinas and terminated there route in Norfolk. This due to deregulation was perfect and a legal way for OD to expand it's reach.
However, OD didn't have the $600,000.00 it took to buy out Bottoms-Fiske so what to do what to do. They looked and saw they had very little debt so they negotiated a deal with Bottoms-Fiske they would pay off $400,000.00 of balance over 8 years at 5% interest and put $200,000 down. Of course Old Dominion didn't really have $200,000 either so they had to barrow that as well. They really had it all on the line.
They restructured management and got ready to run Old Dominion and Bottoms Fiske, but as it came time turn the page another blow to the company was on the way.The Shadow, Texas_hwy_287, McUzi and 2 others Thank this. -

Hi everyone, well I know the updates have been coming about once a week. I was kind of busy today. I thought about getting in one today, but it didn't happen. Have company coming over tomorrow.
We had a little bit of a weather event we had some snow it's been a boring winter thus far, but we finally had a little bit of snow and it was enough to send everyone into battle mode so I was doing that today. It was just a small scrimmage, but it exposed some of the weak spots. Over all though everything went off pretty good. I know most places like @Texas_hwy_287 don't have to worry about goofy boring municipal truck work. However if any of you are interested in vactor trucking or municipal trucking you can read about all the heavy hard hitting pavement pounding action here.

Then and this is important there are diversions and enthusiasms. I decided to watch Netflix which is a diversion, I don’t watch it much during the week. But I caught up on watching garbage on Netflix uhh then that was about it. Should have been updating this thread lol.dwells40, G13Tomcat and Texas_hwy_287 Thank this. -
The one thing I will say is I was watching Friday Night Tykes about youth football in Texas and they also had a kind of slow and only mildly interesting thank god it was only 5 episodes documentary about Competitive College Cheerleading which I concluded is a lot of work for almost no pay off, but I got to see and learn the behind the scenes of big time Texas Football and Texas Cheerleading which are both big industries even at the grade school and college level. What I do with this info I don’t know lol, but I got to see people living in Texas. Lol.
