Please don't park on the shoulder of the road. At all. Not with your hazards on, not if your dog needs potty, not in a tree, nor with a bee . . . No sir, do not park on the shoulder.

Park on an off ramp, or an on ramp, in a truck stop, at the porn shop - yes sir that is where to stop.

Just made it from Indy to Erick,OK in more horrendous conditions. Lost count of the amount of trucks parked on the shoulder. Very dangerous place to be. Lots of Swift and prime, CRST etc . . . not in their training manual I guess.

I'll let you off for the following - complete mechanical failure.Tire fire - heart attack. There may be a couple more. Help.

Otherwise, doing logs, eating, walking the dog, checking your reefer . . . no dice. Not worth the hazard you create.

Thank you, and have at it, kiddies!

Great Advice, but skip the off ramp also, pull across and park on the on ramp if you must.

Yes - if you can. Better to be hit at acceleration speed than "just off highway " speed.

Trucking - aka the "best of the worst case scenario" occupation.

I also agree with chicknwing. I avoid stopping on any off ramp like the plague. I'm an ON-ramp aficionado.
Due to speed of vehicles exiting and often their inattentiveness, combined with curves, makes it not much different than the highway shoulder. Great advise tho, that I wish more drivers would open their eyes to.

I'm guilty of stopping on the shoulder in nasty weather this week. Rt 4 a few miles west of Rutland VT. My excuse is that my truck's fuel lines and filters froze and she quit running. Serves me right for not putting 9-1-1 in the tanks before leaving.

I'd imagine a lot of the shoulder stoppers are on elogs and it's more like "ZOMG outta time stop now!!". Which is never a valid reason to stop in an unsafe spot and endanger yourself and others, btw.

A buddy of mine said when he desperately needed to water his R-side drives, it qualified as an emergency. I couldn't argue with that.
