One of the shop types said it was a ring and cylinder problem. The cylinder would get waves in them from a problem related to the rings. The problem sounds a little bit like what you are experiencing with the erratic oil loss.
When it went in for full overhaul at 280k, it was burning a gallon per thousand miles. MPG was low 6s at this point, down from mid 7s. Regened alot, not much smoke.
Cummins paid that bill.
Was set up at 550hp on an 18 with 3:36 rears.Vic Firth, Broke Down 69, bzinger and 2 others Thank this. -
Heck my 85 kw 3406b would burn a gallon going to LA from st Paul mn and I thought nothing of it ...had 900k on it when I sold it and still ran fine .Feedman, Vic Firth, Broke Down 69 and 2 others Thank this. -
The DPF should keep it from smoking noticeably, btw it will probably require more frequent regens.
That 2008 Columbia I drove left a trail when it regenerated on the road, otherwise you never saw smoke. With the weed burner exhaust on this one, I never see any smoke.bzinger, Broke Down 69, Shock Therapy and 1 other person Thank this.
